These letters were written to eachother over the course of an argument so that Trevor wasn't able to smart-talk his mother. Trevor's mom always included a line from the bible at the start of her letters, "'Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.' -Colossians 3:20" (Noah, 82). It was a full-blown identity crisis. Trevor Noah grew up not knowing where he fit in, with the white kids, with the black kids, with the colored kids, because wherever he went he was treated differently. Trevor believes that it is everyone's duty to themselves to find who they are regardless of the color of their skin. That is the deeper connection the the story. A lot of the families who live here if not all of them are not rich. They do not have a lot of money, "The story of Soweto is the story of the driveways. It's a hopeful place" (Noah, 42). Hope is a reoccurring message throughout the memoir. She taught him that being set in your ways and being stubborn makes people move for you. She believes that you shouldn't change your life just to make others happy. She also wanted what's best for her kids. Even if that meant throwing them out of a moving car, "I was too confused and too angry about getting thrown out of the car to realize what had just happened. My mother had saved my life" (Noah, 17). Trevor took a while to realize how much his mom really did for him and how much she cared behind all of the hidings and scoldings. You could not live in the same areas as people not like you, you could not be near people not like you, and you most certainly could not have relationships with people not like you. Trevor Noah was born in a time where he himself was considered a crime. Colored people were the result of two people who were not allowed to be together by law. Trevor, was always making sure that he could fit in at school because he never knew where to go. He would shift from group to group trying to find somewhere he belonged. But with every different colored group he found himself changing, "I became a chameleon. My color didn't change, but I could change your perception of my color" (Noah, 56). Depending on the way Trevor acted he was able to appear "more white" or "more black" to certain groups of children at his school. Trevor Noah and his whole community relied on home to keep themselves going. The most prominent symbol Noah mentions are the driveways in Soweto, "The story of Soweto is the story of driveways. It's a hopeful place" (Noah, 42). The driveways represent home because nobody who lives in Soweto had the money to afford a car, yet everyone had driveways. Why have a driveway without a car? But regret is the thing we should fear most. Failure is an answer. Rejection is an answer. Regret is an eternal question you will never have the answer to" (Noah, 143). This advice is something that everyone needs to hear in their lives. This advice informs the reader that they should be talking about how they overcame obstacles in their life to get to where they are today.
