As in bishops they are very important to the christian society. As they are chosen by the kings and approved by the popes. Because of this, they can focus on political matters. Followers aren't okay with a bishop having political powers, but instead having him to focused on spiritual powers only. However they needed to be in political powers to help improve the cathedral.

Typical Medieval Cathedral Layout

The medieval Cathedral has been part of the system for a while and acts as a over size church. They first made these in 313 A.D, however it wasn't as completed. It was simply a church that big with effort in it. But then in 1000 A.D, there were bishops, pope, christians, and others, they made the first fully functional Cathedral (below). It intentionally made to be like a cross. They developed new skills such as colorized glass, architecture, and less limits to budget costs. And thus making the official cathedral.

(The image above is a layer of a cathedral)
