definition of Outsider

In victorian literature, the role of the 'outsider' is given to a character who does not fit neatly into victorian society or norms, people with physical deformaties were commonly seen as monsters or outsiders, as it was believed that there was something wrong with them according to the laws of God, and to some,Darwin's, theory of survival of the fittest. Outsiders in British literature provide the world with a new viewpoint about deformities, that it can occur in normal society, this removes the fear of deformity of the era, and allows society to determine right from wrong by comparing themselves to the 'monsters'.

How the characters in Jekyll and Hyde present the 'outsider'?

The most obvious character to deem as an outsider is Mr.Hyde, Mr. hydes appearance is used by stevenson to evoke a sense of fear from the audience during the victorian era, Enflied described him as "so ugly that it brought out the sweat", the hyperbole suggests that Hyde possibly looks deformed or not human looking. Mr. Hyde could be seen as an outsider, due to his appearance, and the stereotypes Victorians set for people who looked different or acted abnormally.

In the book Hyde is never treated with respect by the other character, despite being an acquatence of Dr. Jekyll, this is due to the fact that his appearance wasn't considered to be normal. The most clear sign we have in the book which suggests that Hyde has a deformity is, how the characters describe him as "deformed somewhere", even though it is obvious Hyde has a deformity, it is uncertain of where it is, which makes his face that much freakish. This could also bring fear to the characters and the reader as seeing something that looks human yet has something that makes it look inhuman gives a sense of mystery, this could also link to Hyde looking similar to an ape, by sharing some characteristics, Darwins theory of evolution links too this, as some believed humans evolved from apes.

what stevenson is suggesting through the refrences of the idea?

Many 19th century authors including Stevenson were showing the ideas aboout deformity and freakishness as things that can happen in a normal society which is why Hyde is the alter ego or a respected man with a high status instead of a lower class citizen.

The British wanted the chance to view the "other", and were also disgusted by the possibility of their inclusions in society. this would mean an introduction of deformity and freakishness grander scale that was before present. Stevenson included the character of Hyde so society could experience what it was like to meet an "outsider" without haveing to interact with them.

People had a fear that deformities could invade their bloodline and they would also become 'abnormal'. This would expose the faults they already possessed which they were trying to keep secret, aswell as add new levels of secrets that they would have to attempt to Hyde. Stevensons use of a split personality with one being prestigious and the other being an outsider shows the idea that everyone possesses two personalities and the only one thats shown is the one deemed to be socially acceptable leading to everyone having to hide their darker side.

Int the 19th century England, the apearance of physical abnormalities within society was a rampent cause for panic. to be abnormal during the romantic and victorian ages meant that there was something wrong with you according to the laws of god, society and nature. The characters in the book always describe Hyde as being disfigured. "he must be deformed somewhere".

To be a freak or to be deformed was cause for ridicle and spectacle. If a person didn't fall into the idea of normlcy withing society, they were considered the "other". In the book Hyde is never treated with respect despite being an acquatence of Dr. Jekyll, this is due to the fact that his appearance wasn't considered to be normal.

"he must be deformed somwhere"
"pale and dwarfish"

how the settings reflect the outsider

there is a juxtoposition between Hyde and Jekyll's door, Hyde's door is described as "blistered and distained" and this is due to some Victorian's beieving that outsiders were uncivilised and unable to maintain good living conditions. However Jekyll's house directly contrasts to the back of the house, where Hyde lives. This mirrors the comparison between Hyde's and Jekyll's lifestyle, appearance, personality and reputation. " wore a great air of wealth and comfort".
