Late medieval medicine was dominated by the Greek physician Galen. He influenced the world in anatomy, physiology, and disease. He dissected animals to gain a very inaccurate understanding of human anatomy. Physiology was also based on Galen's hypotheses.
Galen influenced disease treatment as well. He treated disease based on the four bodily humors: blood, yellow bile, phlegm, and black bile.

Questions & Answers:
Q: What causes disease?
A: chemical imbalances localized in specific organs
Q: What cures diseases?
A: chemical remedies

Improvements on Previous Ideas
Paracelsus paved the path towards modern medicine. Before, physicians gave patients random dosages of medicines. However, Paracelsus paid careful attention to giving his patients proper dosages of medicine. Paracelsus also turned away from the previous idea that "contraries cure" in favor of the idea of "like cures like". "Like cures Like" was the idea that poison that caused a disease could also be that disease's cure if given in the correct dosage amount.

Proving his theory correct and disproving old theories
Paracelsus was able to prove his theory of "like cures like" correct by actually curing his patients. He disproved his fellow physicians Aristotle and Galen because many of Aristotle and Galen's remedies and dosages did not cure their patients.

Paracelsus's Beliefs

Paracelsus, originally Philippus Aureolus von Hohenheim, received a medical degree from the University of Ferrara in Italy. He was fired from his position as city physician and professor of medicine in Basel because he lashed out at people who disagreed with his ideas.
Paracelsus rejected the work of Aristotle and Galen. He attacked the universities as centers of the work of these men. He wanted to prove that Galen's method of treating disease was incorrect. He believed in the ancient Germanic folk principle, which states that "like cures like." This means that whatever caused a disease would also cure a disease if used in the proper quantity.
Paracelsus also wanted to replace the traditional philosophical system with a system of chemical philosophy.

Paracelsus earned a strong reputation of curing many of his patients. Even though Paracelsus showed the effectiveness of toxic substance treatment, his opponents believed that he was a "homicide physician." In the future, most people accepted his treatment method and considered him a father of modern medicine.
