The process of distillation is widely debated as to when it was actually created, with records dating back even as early as Mesopotamia, though it is commonly accepted as being the most sophisticated during the time of Islam.

The image I picked is of an early distillery. The base of the instrument, situated over the flame, would be to heat the water into a vapor free of contaminants. The water vapor would be able to collect in the thin tube while the contaminants were left behind and the pure water would be left in the smaller bulb at the end of the tube.

This contraption is very practical for many reasons. At the time, it most likely would have been for purifying substances such as alcohol for medicinal purposes and water, etc. Today, distilleries are commonly used for liquor manufacturing.

This item shows that during the Islamic Empire they were very focused on learning more about the world they lived in an trying to understand how it could work to their benefit. Advancements in science and mathematics during that time showed that they were constantly focused on improving the world in which they lived.

I chose this piece for no particular reason.

It is uncertain when this poem was created.

I picked this one-page poem. There's not much to describe here. It's Arabic writing on some sort of heavy paper and it's describing Islamic law. Most likely written by a teacher to teach his students with.

As stated before, I think this was created to teach lessons to students. Similar to what we do even today, memorizing a poem, song, or rhyme is makes it easy to remember what we are learning so this poem most likely had similar purpose.

This item shows that the Islamic empire di things similarly to today. We use poems and rhymes to learn lessons in classrooms in the 21st century, the taught using poems and rhymes during the Islamic Empire. Similar methods have carried through generations. Maybe it's effective after all! :)

Finally, I chose this piece because I thought it was cool. That's really it. I think it's neat that we still have written records of things from so long ago so I chose it.

Sidney McAlear

Complex Geometric Symmetries

The expansion and development of geometry through Islamic art and architecture can be related to the significant growth of science and technology in the Middle East, Iran, and Central Asia during the 8th and 9th centuries; such progress was prompted by translations of ancient texts from languages such as Greek and Sanskrit. By the 10th century, original Muslim contributions to science became significant. The earliest written document on geometry in the Islamic history of science is that authored by Khwarizmi in the early 9th century. Thus, history of Islamic geometrical ornaments is characterized by a gap of nearly three centuries—from the rise of Islam in the early 7th century to the late 9th century, when the earliest example of geometrical decorations can be traced from the surviving buildings of the Muslim world. The picture shown is a good example of how everything was figured out, there is no origin information to the picture as far as i know.
-Grace H

The Qur'an contains few details concerning "proper" dress; most guidance is contained in the Hadith (sayings of the prophet Muhammad) literature, an important component of Islamic law. However, it is concerned primarily with certain Muslim rituals, such as the hajj, or burial, rather than with everyday wear. Each major grouping and sect of Islam relies on its own Hadith compilation for legal guidance, and over time and in response to regional requirements historic judgements were clarified or superseded. So there is no universal ruling regarding the nature and character of "proper" dress, including female veiling. Maliki law, for example, permitted one finger's width of pure silk for (male) garment trimming, while pure silk outer garments were acceptable in Hanafi circles. All theologians, whether Sunnī or Shīcī, preferred the devout Muslim male to dress austerely in cotton, linen, or wool, and Muslim mystics were known as sufīs "wearers of wool." However, it was generally agreed that the prosperity and power of the Islamic state was best demonstrated through ostentatious dress and ceremonial; Muslim philosophers, such as Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406), acknowledged that cultured societies were recognized by their tailored garments, and not by simple Bedouin wraps.
