On August 21 2009, the slick was released following a blowout from the Montara wellhead platform. The first 4 attempts to plug the oil leak was unsuccessful but the 5th attempt was successful. The government decided to bomb the Torrey Canyon after the other attempts failed. On November 10th 1988, the Liberian tanker ODYSSEY, almost fully loaded with a cargo of 132,157 oil, broke into two and sank in the ocean. Because of the rough weather conditions, the Canadian Coast Guard was only able to come within 1.75 miles of the ship while on fire. As the spill happened 700 miles from the nearest coastline, there were no concerns about pollution as the oil was expected to dissipate naturally. The oil spill happened because of the destruction of a Taylor Energy oil platform during Hurricane Ivan. The amount of oil in the spill was about 1,400,000 gallons. They spent about $435 million on cleaning up the oil spill.
