On December 19th, 1972 the South Korean tanker SEA STAR collided with the Brazilian tanker HORTA BARBOSA. Both vessels caught on fire but while HORTA BARBOSA extinguished in a day the SEA STAR lasted for five days. This all resulted in a spillage of approximately 115,000 tones of oil that hurt the Gulf of Omen very badly. It was cleaned up either by being burned or contained and taken from the surface, and the oil that was on land was cleaned mechanically and with the use of despersants.

The montara oil spill was an oil and gas leak. Took place in the Montara oil field in the Timor sea, off the northern coast of Western Australia. It is considered on of Australia's worst oil disasters. On August 21 2009, the slick was released following a blowout from the Montara wellhead platform. The first 4 attempts to plug the oil leak was unsuccessful but the 5th attempt was successful. They pumped approximately 3,400 barrels of mud into a relief well to stop the leak.

Torrey Canyon was men of the world’s most serious oil spills. It spilled an estimated 25-36 million gallons of crude oil. The beaches were cleaned up within several years, but the oil from the spill was still killing wildlife today. To clean up the oil, they tried spraying it with detergent, but it didn’t work. They also tried untested methods to try to control the spill. The government decided to bomb the Torrey Canyon after the other attempts failed. The local people and organizations gave their time and resources to help the cleanup operations.

Because of the rough weather conditions, the Canadian Coast Guard was only able to come within 1.75 miles of the ship while on fire. As the spill happened 700 miles from the nearest coastline, there were no concerns about pollution as the oil was expected to dissipate naturally. Ethan hinchley

The Taylor oil spill happened in 2004 and was located in the Gulf of Mexico around 11 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The oil spill happened because of the destruction of a Taylor Energy oil platform during Hurricane Ivan. The amount of oil in the spill was about 1,400,000 gallons. They spent about $435 million on cleaning up the oil spill. They clean it up they had to pluck the deck of the platform from the ocean and plug about a third of the wells, which built a type of shield to keep the crude from rising.
