Beginning

It all started with the estates general. They used a form of social arrangement to divide all the people into three different estates: the first, second, and third. The first estate comprised the highest-ranking people, including church officials. They made up only one percent of the population, yet they owned 10% of the land and didn't have to pay taxes. The second estate was more of a present-day middle class. They comprised 10% of the population and did not have to pay taxes. Then, finally, the lowest and poorest estate was the third estate. They made up 89% of the population and had to pay all the taxes, struggled to pay for their food because their jobs paid 15 to 20 cents a day, and wanted to be fairly represented. The issue with this representation is that the third estate paid for everything despite having the least money. The third estate had limited land since the first and second estates owned most of it, and the king used all the taxes the third estate paid. To resolve this inequality, the third estate decided to have a national assembly, which was supposed to help represent the third estate's interests and voice against the first and second estates. This was supposed to resolve the inequality towards the third estate, but it did not succeed because when all estates decided to meet, they locked the doors and did not allow the third estate to enter; hence, further actions were needed. The third estate gathered at a nearby tennis court as a form of revolt against the locked doors, and they promised not to disband until France made a fair new constitution. King Louis XVI was alarmed and surprised by this and tried to dissolve the situation by showing his strength and stationing his military around France to try and scare the people. This did not work; it only angered the third estate more.

After all their failed attempts to make a fair government, they decided to take mildly violent action. They stormed the Bastille because they felt King Louis XVI violated their rights. For example, the Third Estate had to pay high taxes, had food shortages, and had rising bread prices. As a result, the Third Estate attempted to rise against the soldiers of the Bastille, and they succeeded in raiding it. While storming the Bastille, they also succeeded in freeing political prisoners and acquiring weapons from it. The women also get involved in revolts. They march the Palace of Versailles because the bread prices have risen. The reason it is the Palace of Versailles that they decide to storm is because that is where the queen is, and there are rumors that she is holding most of the bread. This is justifiable because they had previously tried to make everything fair peacefully, but since the King does not want to change anything, they decide to take further action. Remember that they are barely scraping by because the prices of everything have risen, and they barely make any money at their jobs. Then comes the attempt to run a legislative government. It operates as a law-making government that is supposed to create equality and freedom for men, but this fails immediately because they are not equally representing every estate. It failed also because neighboring governments were concerned about the spread of these ideas, inflation, and food shortages. After the abolition of the monarchy came the French Republic. Robespierre led this, and its goal was to support people's rights, but it did not go as planned. He started to kill anyone who spoke out against the revolution, reaching around 70000 deaths. This was the beginning of the reign of terror and soon came to an end when he gained too much power and was put to death.

The directory was another form of government that was attempted. It contained the upper and lower houses. The lower house proposed all laws, and the upper house accepted or declined them. The main struggle with this government was that the upper house had all the power to veto laws, and other people could bribe them to choose which laws were accepted and declined. Napoleon then became the leader of France. He was a military genius who graduated from military school at the young age of 16. He invaded and tried to colonize Egypt; some places he conquered were Austria, Prussia, Portugal, and Spain. He put his family members in charge of these countries. He also attempted to unify Europe under French rule. He created the Napoleonic code, which gave men equal rights, deprived women of their rights, simplified laws for France, eliminated the estate's system, allowed religious toleration, restored centralized government, increased education availability, and improved the relationship with the pope. Napoleon left a very complex legacy that included good aspects and bad aspects. Some good elements were freedom of religion, while some bad aspects were his depriving women of rights. In the end, King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were beheaded.
