Harrison Bergeron shows us that an equal society doesn't necessarily make a better society. Moreover, it can negatively impact people's lives, even if they don't realize it. Though many people wish for a certain type of lifestyle for everyone, this does not ensure the best for individuals. As Hazel and George speak, their conversation is interrupted by George's handicap. Ultimately, the couple cannot even hold a short conversation.

”‘The minute people start cheating on laws, what do you think happens to society?’ If Hazel hadn't been able to come up with an answer to this question, George couldn't have supplied one. A siren was going off in his head. ‘Reckon it'd fall all apart,’ said Hazel. ‘What would?’ said George blankly. ‘Society,’ said Hazel uncertainly. ‘Wasn't that what you just said?’ ‘Who knows?’ said George.”

In the quote below, it describes how George is limited of his abilities because they are above "normal". This text makes us realize that perhaps it is best if we let things play out naturally, and how they are meant to, instead of controlling everything and everyone around us.

“It was tragic, all right, but George and Hazel couldn't think about it very hard. Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn't think about anything except in short bursts. And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times.”

This text makes the reader understand and see what a highly advanced society would look like. Rather than having flying cars, and relaxing in a fun and developed world, the story gives us a different perspective and side of what this could really look like. There is a loss of “life” in such an environment, where everyone is so involved in new technology like high speed cars.

“During the day it was a thunderous surge of cars, the gas stations open, a great insect rustling and a ceaseless jockeying for position as the scarab-beetles, a faint incense puttering from their exhausts, skimmed homeward to the far directions.”

The Pedestrian talks about how the people in the story do not connect with nature and others. They don’t even take part in simple activities outside, like walking. Technology like television take over books and magazines, but as described, they never leave an impact like books do. They are plainly screens that do not allow for any creative freedom and use of one's imagination.

“Magazines and books didn't sell any more. Everything went on in the tomblike houses at night now, he thought, continuing his fancy. The tombs, ill-lit by television light, where the people sat like the dead, the gray or multicolored lights touching their faces, but never really touching them."

In this story, even the police have been replaced by technology. The protagonist is faced against a police officer that questions why he is walking on the streets at night. However, this cop later turns out to just be the car talking. The car does not hold the human mind and ability to show compassion or understand the protagonist's situation. This is why it is crucial to be in control of how much technology effects human life and society. This is what this story teaches us, as it gives us more insight of what an environment like such would be like.

“As he had expected, there was no one in the front seat, no one in the car at all.”

A society can make individuals feel out of place just because they are different from everyone else. This makes others understand how life is for people that just don't "fit in". Everyone has their own identity, and it doesn't make sense to categorize people based on how they look or act. The story says the same and lets us see how a chimpanzee with an implant struggles with being labeled by others. If such an "evil robot monkey" existed, this story helps us understand how others would probably treat the creature, and what impact this could have on the monkey.

“He seemed to understand the hellish limbo where Sly lived—too smart to be with other chimps, but too much of an animal to be with humans.”

The Pedestrian acknowledges how if people were to engage in behaviors that did not fit the regular activities others engaged in, such actions would be considered abnormal. In the short story, the protagonist takes walks at night and is considered jobless because he is an author and books don't sell anymore. His actions do not reflect those living in an advanced society, which is why he is taken to a Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies. This brings us a greater understanding of what a highly advanced society could look like for some, as they engage in behaviors that are different from society.

"Where are you taking me?" The car hesitated, or rather gave a faint
whirring click, as if information, somewhere, was dropping card by punch-slotted card under electric eyes. "To the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies."
