One thing I’ll start doing is using more choice-based assessments that allow students to show understanding in different formats (e.g., podcast, infographic, short video, or written response). This will honor their individual strengths and needs while promoting deeper engagement with U.S. History, World History, and Civics content.

One thing I’ll keep doing is incorporating real-world connections and current events to anchor lessons in relevance—especially when discussing power, governance, or historical cause and effect. This helps my students, many of whom benefit from context and personal meaning, connect to schema and promote critical thinking skills.

One thing I’ll share with a colleague is how using sentence starters, guided notes, and visuals with vocabulary has helped my students access challenging texts and discussions. These supports scaffold participation without watering down rigor and have made a noticeable difference in student confidence and retention.
