Since I was a little kid all the way up to coming to MSU I always wanted to be involved in business. Growing up seeing successful business men and the opportunities they have and the things they get to do and see is always something I wanted to do. After hearing what a great business school MSU has to offer it has been my goal to get into the Broad school of business to graduate with a degree in finance and eventually go to grad school.

My Interview

I was able to interview my dad for writing project 3. He is a corporate attorney for a large hotel company who buy and sell hotels. He has worked in the law field for almost 30 years and 20 at his current position as a corporate attorney. He received his undergrad at the University of Augustana in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and his Masters at the University of Denver. He loves what he does and enjoys his day to day activities as a lawyer.

I chose the Business and Law Association because it is a perfect club that fits both of my interests. I am currently majoring in finance, however I find the field of law interesting too. Along with gaining experience and knowledge in these fields this club has perks as well.

The main thing that caught my eye about this club was the networking opportunities that it offers. I think the biggest thing when coming to college is networking and making friends that can benefit you in the real world. Along with the great networking I found that the knowledge and advice that professionals in the legal and business world is a great tool to have.

For my second club that I picked I chose the Business Golf Club. The reason I chose this club is because I love the game of golf and want to work in the field of business.

The main thing that interests me is it highlights the game of golf into business. I grew up playing golf my whole life and it is one of my favorite hobbies. Along with the game of golf they include the importance it has in business. I have wanted to study business my whole life and a club that has one of my favorite sports and the field I want to work in in the future this club caught my eye.

These careers interest me the most because they are in very different areas of the financial field. I am not to sure what area I want to entire which is why these 3 interest me the most. They each have completely different skill sets and things you do on the job. Each involve the idea of money management and the influence in major business institutions.

Employers that surprised me

There were two main employers that surprised me when I was researching career paths which were accounting for the FBI and Large real estate corporations. Each of these employers surprised me because I did not know finance majors had the ability to work with government or anywhere in the real estate world. Being employed in the real estate world it offers jobs including property management and appraising homes. Along with these very interesting areas of work the FBI also hires finance majors for accounting positions.

Internships

A strategy that I found was the importance of internships in the business world. Over the summer companies offer experience to college students in the workplace to maybe be offered a real position at the company. I found to use these to your advantage as the more experience you have with certain companies the more you will be likely to receive a job when you are done with your undergrad.

Problem Solving

Problem solving is a major skill that most employers look at into hiring new staff. Problem solving and working together with coworkers is a very useful skill that gets used everyday in the work place. However, problem solving is known to be a very daunting task and in the words of a chemical engineer "The first thing that comes to mind is not always the best solution" (1:00-1:06) This skill is very hard to learn and it takes lots of time and practice under high stress to become a master. Becoming great at this skill can put you ahead of your competition in interviews. Mentioned in the video they give three great ways to show future employers that you are a problem solver.

Professionalism is another great skill to have when you are in an interview with a future employer. It is defined as the "polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained"(0:12) Professionalism is a great way to be yourself and to show employers that you care about the position. How to prepare- There is not a designated degree that you need to be successful in the finance world. After watching these videos I really learned how to prepare for the work field once I graduate. Learning and understanding skills to show employers can allow me as an undergrad to harness and become better at these skills to in turn help in my professional interviews.

As well as watching and learning about jobs in my field I learned the best routes to take as well as the different activities you do at these jobs and lastly how I can become successful in this certain field.

Why Finance?

In high school I found that I loved math. I have always had a math brain in the words of my mom and it has been my natural strong suit in school. Knowing this and loving math I wanted to go into a field that involves math and business. I found finance when I first visited MSU and I was hooked with all the programs they offer and the job opportunities that you can receive through this degree.

My dreams

The overall dream that I want to accomplish with this degree is a CFO at a major corporate company. Not only would I love to be a CFO a financial advisor is another position that I would love to have when I am older. However, with those being my overall goals with my life my dreams right now would be to get into the business school, finish my undergrad degree, and then go recieve my MBA at a school down south.

My concerns

I have a few things that concern me in my process to not only receive a degree in finance but also entering the work force. The main things that concern me are

Getting into the Broad College of Business
Accepted into a good grad school
Graduating from grad school
Receiving a well paying job after schooling

I understand that some of these concerns are years apart but they are things that I have to work hard towards to be successful in my desired field.

Influences

The major influences in my life are definitely my mom and dad. They have encouraged me to try my best and chase my dreams ever since I was little. Along with them helping me do what I love they have showed me what hard work can do and have been great role models being successful attorneys.

What have I learned through WP3

After doing lots of research on the field of finance I have learned a few things.

Any degree you receive in school does not determine your success in finance
Experience is a must in college before you enter the real work force
Networking plays a huge part in success

These were some of the major things that I learned researching for this project. It gave me a glimpse into the best route I can take and prepare for while I am still a freshman in college. It allowed me to really understand what I am setting myself up to do.

This interview helped me understand the guiding questions by picking questions that are somewhat similar to each other so that it runs smooth. Along with the guiding questions the interview also had questions that were not mandatory to also help with the smoothness of the interview. Questions in between these main question also adds context to the interview as well as more information to work off of.

I had a lot of takeaways from this project as it offered lots of information about my future in the real world. I had a few major takeaways that resinated with me.

Your degree does not match what you are gonna do or how successful you will be in finance
Start experiencing in the work field now
There are lots of positions and opportunities in finance

I do not 100 percent need to know what job I want to do

Cycling through the writing stages, what specifically did you learn about yourself?
Working through this project I found that time management and setting enough time aside to complete my project was challenging.
What specifically would I do the same? Offer some detail and explanation.
I would still utilize the time working outside of class again because during the week I was able to get a lot more of my project done in between my classes
What specifically would I do differently? Offer some detail and explanation.
One thing I would do differently would be to not procrastinate as much and to do the project a little at a time.

One thing that I enjoyed about WP3 was we were given the chance to interview and research professionals in the area we want to work after college

How much has this project affected or influenced how you view your field of study?
This project really opened my eyes to the vast world of finance and it made me feel a lot better about the routes that you can take in this field.
Will this project have any influence on how you approach your studies in your field?
I think this project will have some influence on me in the future as I have an idea what each field of finance looks like and find one that I want to enter after college
How specifically did the interview impact you?
This interview impacted me a lot as my dad gave some great points about the workforce. He talked a lot about the change technology had on his job as he states “I can’t remember the last time I hand wrote a document for someone” This really showed me how much jobs will be impacted by technology and how much different my job will be to his now.

Takeaways from my Dad

After interviewing my dad I was able to come back with some major takeaways. The biggest thing that resonated with me was the threat of technology. My dad stated that "AI can do a lot of the work second year attorney's can do."(Chris Eng, 15:16-15:23) He talked a lot about the law field getting more competitive and how technology is changing the game.

I was able to see how lawyers use writing and research as my dad states that "Writing and communicating is mainly via email"(Chris Eng, 3:35-3:39) He also shared his experiences with research as an attorney and he states that researching is "all of his own" (Chris Eng, 8:20-8:24) These statements really show writing and researching as a corporate lawyer and it gave me a glimpse into what the job entails.
