"I don't want to eat is. I wouldn't want to eat anything right now, my appetite having been lost to the sights and smells of a slaughterhouse. And I specifically don't want to eat the contents of the plate, which were, not long ago, the contents of pig in the waiting pen. Maybe there is nothing wrong with eating it. But something deep inside me - reasonable or unreasonable, aesthetic of ethical, selfish or compassionate - simply doesn't want the meat inside my body. For me, that meat is not something to be eaten"(63).

I really enjoy this paragraph. It's phrasing and wording is just very pleasing to read...if that makes sense? I love how Foer starts this passage off with a short blunt sentence. It catches attention and is very straightforward and blunt. Foer also makes this excerpt very relatable. It takes no sides (meat eater/non meat eater) yet still gets the point across that what he saw at the slaughterhouse was not something that he enjoyed seeing.

"Anyone who suggests that there is a perfect symbiosis between the farmers' interest and the animals' is probably trying to sell you something (and it's not made of tofu)"(168).

Symbiosis (n.): a mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups.

Wild oxen and birds display symbiosis in the wild because the bugs on the bison provide the bird with a meal, and the oxen are getting cleaned.
