They protested through petitions in 1875, and then every two years until 1881 when they considered this method was effective.
3. Invited nuns and brothers (Christian Brothers, Mercy Sisters) from Europe and Australia (Josephite sisters) who came to the colony to run Catholic schools. The advantage was that these people were highly loyal, very dedicated and were cheap because they were paid a stipend which was about 20% of the teachers' wage.
4. Catholics protested about having to pay taxes as well as catholic school fees. This was considered double dipping by the government.
5. Set up Catholic Teachers' colleges in Ballarat (1883), Geelong and later in Melb.
6. For 90 years, Catholic Education battled on until 1962 when catholic schools went on strike in Goulburn, NSW to demand the government contribute financial aid to schools. This strike proved that the Government needed Catholic schools to maintain the ability to make school compulsory. From then on money came from the government:
1964 Libraries and Science facilities.
1972 New Whitlam Labourn Government gave funding to enable 80% of school costs to be paid.
