A barrier: school staff not being consistent with child’s behavior plan or understanding it. For example planned ignoring. Not everyone understands that strategy and believe that I am not doing my job when I’m ignoring the target behavior.

Sometimes I worry that I am being a fascist. “The teacher said you can’t be on YouTube.” This is especially concerning when I have to hold my main student to a higher standard than others. The difficulty I have faced in the past was parents and school team weren’t on the same point. Parents have different direction and plan that was working outside of the school and school team was working on generalizing the skills that were learned. Child was taught lots of maths skills without generalizing.

Barriers I have faced would be lack of trust even after extended periods of time.

What I mean by that is even though I was working with a child for almost 2 years on and off, there was still that lack of trust there that built that barrier of disobedience. They felt like they had to show out to express their emotions from what they were going through. They didn’t confide in me because they didn’t trust me. Within trust comes communication. I would have been better able to support them if I could know the root cause of their behavior.

A barrier I faced with a student in the general education setting was the teacher having a hard time with the student making noises. She would always give a look as if I was supposed to make them stop. Even after assisting the student with the sounds she would have a hard time with the students presence in the class as they weren’t completing the same work as the other kids or be verbal to participate.

Initially I faced the issue with a kid who wasn’t willing to write or follow any instruction of the teacher. It was so hard to convince him to start working and focus. He always says why should I write and why do I need to learn.

I don't have too many concerns since I'm pretty seasoned and feel valued in this field and I my position over the years- but if I have to choose something it would be the barrier of working in a school. Period!

So many people and a lot of personalities and sometimes they just don't mix but I think that we should be able to put that aside in order to effectively help the kiddos as much as possible! So I'm hoping that expectation is met for this school year:)
