how would you keep a GIF animation file size small

There are a number of ways to reduce file size in the GIF format, keeping the file small is important for Web use because it needs to be loaded quickly. the best way to reduce the file size is to simple shorten the Animation, this can be done through reducing the number of frames or removing unnecessary sections. the number of colours will also have an effect on the file size, so if similar colors are replaced with the same one. finally reducing the size of images present will also help to reduce the file size as less information will need to be saved in order to recreate the image.

Dithering is the process of juxtaposing pixels of two colours from a limited to palette to create the illusion that a third colour is present.

what is the colour palette that can be supported?

GIF supports up to 8 bits per pixel for each image, allowing a single image to reference its own palette of up to 256 different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of up to 256 colors for each frame. These palette limitations make the GIF format less suitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

What does dithering do to the file compression of a GIF?

Dithering increases the size of the image. For example a figure of a hot air balloon which includes 64 colours has 9,121 bytes but the same image with dithering has the size of 10,052 bytes. Therefore it reduces how much it can be compressed.

This limitation seemed reasonable when GIF was developed because few people could afford the hardware to display more colors simultaneously. Simple graphics, line drawings, cartoons, and grey-scale photographs typically need fewer than 256 colors but now when everyone has the hardware to display more colurs simultaneously, gif are anable to create detailed images because of there limited 256 colour palette.

Transparency is an extra feature for most graphic formats but some graphic programs might completely ignore transparent areas of an image. Because of the limited number of colours GIFs cannot be Opaque they are either transparent or not.
