In chapter 1, Nick returns home when he sees Mr. Gatsby standing on a dock trying to reach for a green light in the dark over at the other side. The green light in chapter 1 is showing us that Gatsby is trying to reach for Daisy on the other side of the bay. It shows the way that Gatsby look at Daisy. Since Daisy was finally in his grasp, he feels as if the walls between the two lost lovers are finally being brought down.
