This group has been put in place for middle school and high school  girls and boys, ages eleven and sixteen, who struggle with the loss of a parent to incarceration.Through a needs assessment, it was determined that s student are effected academically and emotionally while dealing with this loss which prompted counselor to create this group.

Counselor will also gather referral data from teachers TEAMS and family member. The counselor will conduct a screening. This small screening would discuss their thoughts on where they are academically, socially, and emotionally.

    Stage 1 will focus on getting to know each other. The icebreaker would be light so that the participants feel comfortable and promote trust amongst each other. 
     

    Stage 2 will involve engaging activities and discussions that include creating a memory box, picture collage, and writing letters to their parent. 

    Stage 3 conclude with a team building activity where each student shares how the skills learned  in the group has helped with coping and improving their academics and how it will be applied to their everyday life. A follow up plan will be put in place to speak with the students individually and as a group. A follow up with the teachers, family members, students as well to determine if the session was successful or not.

Coping with grief issues for this age group should be approached cautiously by someone who is emotionally intelligent, passionate, and energetic. These leaders work to motivate and promote change through engaging activities and discussion as well as guidance and support to increase students' ability to cope and manage the loss of a parent and change in family dynamics.
