Calvinism was created by John Calvin who was a reformer in the 16th century. The basic idea of Calvinism is the theological tradition of Christian practice. When Calvin was 27 he produced Institutes Of the Christian Religion, which was a manual of Protestant theology. He began the institutes with knowledge of god not the justification of faith. Puritans were strong followers of Johns beliefs.

McCarthyism is accusing someone of something that they never did. This idea was created by Joseph McCarthy's controversial practices. "The Crucible" contains lots of fear and accusations among the people of Salem. McCarthy's brutal accusations can be seen as the false accusations the people of Salem made against the people they thought were witches. Most of the time the accusations were false but the people of Salem and McCarthy still decided to punish them.

Witch Tests

Determining a witch was very easy for the people of Salem because they used very specific tests. For example, one test they used was witch cakes. A witch cake was a form of countermagic made out of the suspects' urine and rye meal. Another interesting witch test was swimming a witch. They would tie up the suspect and dunk them in water. If they sunk they were not a witch but if they floated they were executed.

Puritanism is a belief based on strict religious principles. The Puritans were English Protestants in the 16th century who wanted to purify the church of England. Puritans influenced modern social and economic life heavily. They praised moral righteousness and the witch trials ruined that for them. The trials were influenced by motives that appeared because of the puritans morally right beliefs.

Hysteria in Salem

In January of 1692 mass hysteria broke out because several young women became ill. Hysteria kept increasing because Minster Cotton Mather joined in on the chaos. The accused were slandered and denied basic English rights. The girls then started accusing everyone they hated of being a witch. They would make up fake evidence like in court they would weep, bark, screech, and more. Some of the people accused just admitted guilty to save their lives.
