When you breathe in, it contracts. When it does this, it flattens out and pulls downward. The movement that this causes enlarges the space the lungs fill. This large space pulls air into the lungs. When breathing out, the diaphragm gets bigger. This reduces the space the lungs can fill, and this forces air out. (Luke)
