He was the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Although many literary critics have dismissed him as a novelist and criticized the Swedish Academy for their choice there is no doubt that few writers of his era had such a profound effect on American culture as he had. Awkward and shy from his childhood he could never make friends and as a result he spent a lot of time observing and writing diary. Later, he developed a passion for writing and was ready to do all kinds of jobs to finance his writing career. Apart from working as a journalist and then as an editor he also wrote potboilers and sold plots to established writers to stay afloat. Ultimately, he had his first taste of success with his sixth published novel ‘Main Street’. Subsequently, he penned many other best sellers; but at the same time became addicted to alcohol. Ultimately, he died in Rome from advanced alcoholism at the age of 65.
Lewis 1925 novel ‘Arrowsmith’ was awarded Pulitzer Prize, but for some reason Lewis declined to accept it.
In 1930, Sinclair Lewis was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature. He was the first American writer to win the coveted prize. While presenting the award, special mention was made to his 1922 novel ‘Babitt’.

The legal profession does not suit the unethical Gantry. After college, he attends a Baptist seminary and is ordained as a Baptist minister. While managing to cover up certain sexual indiscretions, he is thrown out of the seminary before completing his BD because he is too drunk to turn up at a church where he is supposed to preach. After several years as a travelling salesman of farm equipment, he becomes manager for Sharon Falconer, an itinerant evangelist. Gantry becomes her lover, but loses both her and his position when she is killed in a fire at her new tabernacle. After this catastrophe, he briefly acts as a "New Thought" evangelist, and eventually becomes a Methodist minister. He marries well and eventually obtains a large congregation in Lewis's fictional Midwestern city of Zenith. During his career, Gantry contributes to the downfall, physical injury, and even death of key people around him, including a sincere minister, Frank Shallard, who is plagued by doubt. I always wanted the main character to be overtaken by the "sword of justice". But he always avoids punishments thanks to his cunning and ability to maintain relationships with the right people. Actually, this is a book about how believers are fooled by narrow-minded and primitive people, whose place is in trading offices and not near the church porch. It was mainly focused in Europe and North America.
The literary movement is characterized by a break with traditional ways of writing. It touched both poetry, prose fiction, and drama. Modernist writers chose to experiment with every type of conceivable literary form and mode of expression.
Lewis was an extremely hard worker; he did extensive research for each novel, carrying notebooks and drawing plans of streets, houses, furniture. All this made it possible for him to evoke a concrete world. This attention to realistic detail extended to the speech of his characters.
