The Bracero Program issued temporary U.S. work permits to millions of Mexicans to ease labor shortages due to World War II. The program ran from 1942 to 1964 in which some 4.5 million Mexicans arrived in the United States in the agricultural or railroad industry.

How Does it Relate to Democracy?

Many growers argued that World War II would bring labor shortages to low-paying agricultural jobs. As a result, the United States created the Bracero Program in response to the people's needs. I would signify this to be an expansion of the United States' democracy because they are listening to the will of the people. In addition to that, the unionization of farm workers signifies democracy at its finest because they help reduce income inequality by making sure all Americans share the benefits of their labor. Unions assure that every member gets heard.

Despite all the benefits that the United States promised, the Braceros faced extreme racism, followed by unlivable wages. Many businesses refused to serve Mexicans or segregated them from white customers. The fair wage policy was ignored by employers and Mexican laborers were paid significantly less, especially for those who were undocumented. Stable housing and access to health care were also limited for them. As more undocumented workers immigrated to the United States, American citizens thought that undocumented immigrants kept wages for other agricultural workers low.
