Prior to taking up this module on painting, I already knew that paintings are 2 dimensional artworks. Unlike sculptures, these are flat-surfaced pieces. Before I thought that painting is mainly composed of only colors by using lines and strokes from varying sizes of paintbrushes. One of the most prominent and widely recognized masterpiece in the whole world even as of today is the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. I have noticed that there were significant traits of painting according to the period they were finished. However, by that time, I was not yet able to distinguish what, or how they differ from each other in terms of style and representation and the underlying themes behind them.

Throughout the Semester, I have learned a lot in the previous classes regarding Architecture and Sculpture. When it comes to painting I encountered the elements that comprise a beautiful painting to be a fine art. For us to be able to create a painting, it must first consist of Subject, Technique, Materials and Style. For example, materials in painting could be acrylic, water, oil, and other kinds. To recognize the unity in the form, elements and principles must fit together. For the color there must be balance; for texture, proportion; for shape contrast, and others. I have also learned to appreciate the paintings of Raphael not only in historical context but understanding the narrative of the image portrayed through the arrangement and organization of elements.

Having said all the things which I already knew before hand and have learned just recently, I would like to touch on the emotional aspect and creativity of modern painters in my era. In the 21st Century, the themes transitioned from daily life, to enlightenment, through romantic period, realism, through social angst, and many more. I would like to fully comprehend the beauty shown in the art although vague and contains vulgar forms in my time. This way, I will be able to relate and recognize the fine arts in the present generation. One thing I also want to ponder on is the personal touch of certain painters wherein it is noticeable by critics according to the style of a painter and the meaning put into the work itself.
