I recognize that in order to respond to current events, students need the space to understand identity and experiences from history in order to move toward a different future. I recognize that as a consumer, I need to actively think about the voices that are represented in the information I receive. I must ask myself who benefits? I must ask myself who is blamed? Who is shamed? I must recognize the danger of a single story and I must spend time learning the different lived experiences of my students and colleagues. I must learn so that I can celebrate the identity of everyone I come into contact with inside our school building and outside our school building as well. I must create space for myself to learn, my students to learn so that we can grow together in a safe space where the identities of all are recognized and celebrated as a gift.

I will not wait to speak on or educate about BIPOC. I will not allow news , social media or current events to tell me when is a good time to talk about hate. I will not let my comfortability stop me from telling the facts and stop allowing people to use a single story to justify hate. I commit to continuing sharing my knowledge and dismantling hate while celebrating our BIPOC community and making sure everyone feels safe, heard and loved.
