Dear Reader,

When I started this inquiry, I wrote as many questions as possible over how to teach writing and then I pondered them for a long time. I talked to my classmates over questions they had and which ones they were to use for their research. I then answered the questions I was able to and then set down my thinking for a while. When I picked it back up, I had decided on this question after it lingered in my mind for days:

How do I include so many learning styles when I teach writing?

So, I set off to research. This is how I was introduced to Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences(MI). I became fascinated by them. I read many of his books to determine how I could use this theory in teaching students to write. This led me to discover other educators who were using MI in their classrooms.

This inquiry has shown me how vital it is to create a curriculum that is student-centered rather than continue to focus on the content. The curriculum should cater to the needs of the students meaning each school year the curriculum changes for the new group of students. The key to doing this is to assess the intelligences the student’s display and even the learning styles (auditory, kinesthetic, and visual) are still applicable to a student-based curriculum.

Feel free to browse through this padlet to have a better understanding of the seven intelligences and their application in writing.

Sincerely,

Ms. Spears
