In chapter one I learned about a young girl named Liza Poole who lives in the woods with her mother. The woods are located in Florida and no one knows they live there because they are living in a little yellow tent. Her mother tells her that they are on vacation until she can afford to buy a house. Liza and her mother live in the woods because Liza's father was abusive and her mother wanted to get away. Liza has fallen in love with living in the woods and the waterscape at Gumbo Limbo Hole. However, there is one problem that has popped up. While Liza is fishing one day a police officer came by with a gun to shoot Dajun. Dajun is an alligator that lives in the pond she if fishing in. Liza loves Dajun and does not want him to killed.
After finishing chapter one I started to put myself in Liza's shoes. She reminds me of when I was a child and how much I loved playing in the woods with my friends. The chapter left me wondering two things. The first thing I wonder is if Dajun will be killed. The second thing that I wonder is where will Liza end up living. I think this book is going to have a lot of suspense to it because of the way the chapter ended. I really hope that they do not kill Dajun. I cannot wait to see what chapter two is about.

After reading chapter two of the text I learned that James James was a man. This was surprising for me because I thought that he was a young boy in the first chapter. I also learned that James James has gone to college before and served in the military. James James really enjoys science and studied it a lot in college. I learned that James James role in Liza K’s life is almost like a mentor. He takes care of her and makes sure she studies for school. I think this is important to know in the book because he is a positive role model for Liza K and she is telling the story. In this chapter I also learned that Liza K, her mother, and James James are not the only people that live in these woods. Priscilla is another lady that lives in the woods. She writes poems about the gator Dajun and she really loves the alligator. She went to college as well and was a writer in a NY magazine. She choose to be homeless because she said when she lived in a house she felt like the walls were closing in on us. I think Priscilla had something tragic happen to her because she also collects gin bottles. I think she could possibly be drinking a lot because no one wants Liza K to know what she does with the bottles. In this chapter they still have not found Dajun, but are looking to find him because they are going to try to hide him in the solution pit. In the next chapter I think that we will find out where Dajun is. I hope that they can save him.

Liza Poole (the narrator) is still on the hunt for Dajun. However, she thinks that she knows where the Dajun is because she climbed up in a tree and thinks that she saw him there. James James and Liza are hanging around Gumbo LImbo whenever the police officer/hunter comes back looking for Dajun. It ends up being funny though because they continue to send him in the wrong direction. They send him over to the golf course. I think that this is funny because they are trying so hard to hide Dajun and it is working. The book keeps me on my toes because it makes me wonder what is going to happen next. I am stuck between two questions now about the book: Will the police find Dajun and kill him? Will Liza Poole live in these woods the whole book? This book has seemed like a great book to use in an elementary science classroom so far! I think it would be a good way to get students thinking about series of events!

This chapter still remains a mystery for us. We do not know where Dajun is, but we also do not know where Priscilla is and what she is up to. Liza Poole is looking around her stuff and her card table is put up along with her mini bottles. Liza Poole also notices that she sugar packets stuck around. I think it will be cool to try to figure out what she is up to. Liza Poole and James James are still hunting for Dajun to save him. They thought he may have gone into the mangrove swamp across the highway, but did not find him. They are now thinking of an idea to tell the hunter that someone else shot Dajun that way he will come back. I think it is interesting that they are trying to hide Dajun and they also have to hide the fact that they live in the woods. I think that it will be neat to figure out how this all works out!

In this chapter James James and Liza Poole go to the County Government Center. When they were there they ran into Caruso and Beef Bones. They were waiting on his friend Sweeney. He owned a toxic waste disposal plant and needed help picking up garbage that was ruining nature. At the County Government Center Liza Poole got a map from a nice lady that seemed to be very concerned about Gumbo Limbo. She talked about how different it was when she was younger. Originally the map was suppose to cost five dollars, but since her class was studying the subject she received the map for free. However, she had to lie about her address because she did not want the lady to know that she lived in the woods. When she got done talking to the lady about the map she left James James to go look for Dajun. However, she did not find him. She saw Priscilla on her way back home and found out that Travis was back and looking for the gator still. That explained to Liza Poole why she saw people by the swamp. They are trying to get the award.

In this chapter we learned that Priscilla is not an alcoholic with her mini bottles. She uses these bottles to fill with sugar water to feed the humming birds. However, there was another mystery that she has now. Liza Poole saw her notebook of poems and it was empty. Therefore, we now do not know what Priscilla is doing with all of her poems or if she is even writing them. In this chapter as well we still did not find Dajun. However, Liza Poole thinks that he may be in the borrow pit and that he may be sick. They believe that Dajun may be sick because of PCP in the water. PCP is used to kill fungi or things in plants. When it rained bad at Gumbo Limbo recently they thought that maybe that PCP got into the water stream. Some good news from this chapter is that Liza Poole's dad has left to go up north for therapy. Therefore, they do not have to worry about him finding them.

In chapter seven we learned that James James got offered a job, but turned it down because he does not like people telling him what to do. We also learned that there are not strange people in the woods because there is a parrot. Liza Poole is walking down trails early in the morning and she notices the hunter is back. He tells Liza he has been searching for Dajun for ten days. This gives Liza a lot of information because she notices that the Gumbo Limbo still has not started growing moss so he must still be in there. When Liza meets the parrot she learns that he can talk and he is one of the better talking parrots. He even helps Liza figure out where Dajun is. He gives her a clue to make her believe that Dajun is coming out at night. Liza decides to name him Sherlock Holmes because he has solved the mystery. I cannot wait for next chapter to see if she finds Dajun.

In chapter eight we finally found where Dajun is. He has been hiding during the day and coming out at night. Liza Poole was the one that found him, but she got the clue from the parrot that she found. Travis (the officer) is still coming out during the day searching for Dajun. He has not found him, but the mystery still lives on. Where does Dajun hide during the day? The bottom of Gumbo Limbo where it is cold? In this chapter another important thing happened. Liza Poole's mother got two jobs as a restaurant manager. This means that she will be able to afford a house and she wants to leave Gumbo Limbo woods, but Liza does not want to. Another major thing happened, a social worker found Pricisilla in the fields. They want to take her to the shelter. I cannot wait to see how the book ends.

In chapter nine we find Dajun in Gumbo Limbo, but he is hiding himself with algae in the bottom of the hole. Since he is dark and the algae is green he looks blue-greenish he cannot be seen. We also learn that a lady comes to look at Gumbo Limbo and her dad is thinking about buying the land to keep it as natural as possible. This is exciting for James James because he gets a job as a person who will live in Gumbo Limbo 24 hours a day. This means he does not have to worry about getting in trouble for living in the woods. Liza Poole is sad because she is moving into a motel and eventually a house with her mother. However, she is excited because she gets to keep the parrot because he is attached to her. My favorite part of the chapter was when the lady that is buying Gumbo Limbo allows Priscilla to stay and receive help until she is comfortable living in a place with walls. The book ended great. However, I wish this was a movie and there was a second movie that would come out. I would like to see what happens from here.
