-Students were provided a purpose or a question for rereading, which encouraged the students to want to reread the text.
-They noticed that when the students reread, they had more background knowledge from their previous readings and conversations about the text.
--Teachers never started out reading the text aloud, but they ended up reading it aloud at some point with a lot of different emphasis. This engaged the students, even if they'd already read the text.

The secondary teachers spent very little time frontloading the text, and didn't have much to say about what the students would notice or find once they read it the first time. The only thing they did was go over really obscure vocabulary that the students would come across, then they cut them loose. Many elementary teachers spend too much time frontloading the text, which limits the potential analysis for a lot of students.

Opinion varied on the idea of how much frontloading should take place. After discussion, it was determined that not every text needs frontloading, and that frontloading has been overused in the past. There are some texts that require it and some that don't. 1. FL should not remove the need to to read the text. 2. FL should not take readers away from the text to their own experiences too soon. We have to get students to do the heavy lifting by making sure students are thinking about the text each time they read it.
