In figure 1 attached below, you can view an example of the marking criteria of a persuasive text. Teachers use this marking guide to assess and report on the children's writing skills in the writing section of NAPLAN. This marking criteria is used like a score card to evaluate writing samples similar to how a Rubric would be used. How ever, like in a Rubric the skills needed to earn each mark are not evident.

In figure 2 attached below, you can view an example of a Rubric used for a writing experience. Unlike the NAPLAN marking criteria for writing, the RUBRIC addresses the specific criteria needed to meet each score. This is both helpful and useful when evaluating with students and parents to be able to discuss strengths and provide evidence for the end score.

Figure 3 is an example of a self-assessment scale that can be used along side selected work for children's portfolios. This scale allows children to choose their own work, evaluate how they think they went and explain why they chose this work. This type of assessment can assist a teacher to understand areas of difficulty and strength, as well as can demonstrate progression for reporting.
