Mood contributes to our understanding of a dystopian society by showing us how the people feel and the poor conditions that they are in. In the Harrison Bergeron story, the Author uses harsh word choices and creates a threatening mood to explain what's happening in the story. On line 4, it states, “Ballerinas, technicians, musicians, and announcers cowered on their knees before him, expecting to die.” The violent word choices show that the people were fearing of Harrison and were expecting to die. It contributes to our understandings because that all happened because of the government control. The government wanted people to be the same and forced people to wear handicaps

Haiti showed elements of a dystopian society in the 1990s because of the governmental control and the people's constant need to survive. "There are a lot of Protestants on this boat. A lot of them see themselves as Job or the Children of Israel. I think some of them are hoping something will plunge down from the sky and part the sea for us. They say the Lord gives and the Lord takes away."(lines 56-58). this shows governmental control and survival because the lack of freedom and how unjustified the government was caused the Haitians to escape on boats to get away from them.

Haiti demonstrated elements of a dystopian society in the 1990s because it was under poor government control that made so the Haitians had to depend on their own survival. When Haitians fled and had were put a refugee came they "ate inedible food, at times spoiled, even infested with maggots. The medical care was, at best, ineffective and, at worst, abusive, with medical treatment performed without informed consent" (lines 42 - 44). The dystopian element of survival through how it is revealed through how the Haitians were left to fend for themselves in a false utopia camp they were put in just so they won't have to go back to Haiti. This also shows the poor government control toward Haitians that made them flee the country on boats from their lack of freedom and unjustified treatment.

In the 1990's, Haiti demonstrated elements of a dystopian society because in a dystopian society there is a sense of losing individualism through or without government control. Forcing the inhabitants of the society to flee and survive over little resources. Which relates to the situation in Haiti, becoming refugees and suffering more than they did back home. In the text Children of the Sea we see "i pound my heel on their heads. they make me so mad. everything makes me mad. i am cramped inside all day. they've closed the schools since the army took over. no one is mention ing the old president's name.". As the government takes over, Haiti as it was is forgotten. Only left to be hopeless and dreadful to false freedom

The man in the letter says, "I am more comfortable now with the idea of dying. Not that I have completely accepted it, but I know that it might happen." The mood is depicted to be sad and somber.
Iran was considered a dystopian society during and after the revolution of 1979 because they had no freedom and they were under someones dream of how they want Iran to look like. "What Nabokov captured was the texture of life in a totalitarian society, where you are completely alone in an illusory world full of false promises, where you can no longer differentiate between your savior and your executioner". (14-16). This detail demonstrates how Iran is in government control because they are basically prohibited from their own rights and they have to follow who ever is in charges rules in which they don't feel comfortable.

When those who opposed being under the Islamic rule had "an illusory world full of false promises, where you can no longer differentiate between your savior and your executioner" (lines 15-16). Due to Iran's strict control upon it's citizens, it led to their misery which made them imagine living in a false utopian society where they feel content. "What Nabokov creates for us in Invitation to a Beheading is not the actual physical pain and torture of a totalitarian regime but the nightmarish quality of living in an atmosphere of perpetual dread. Cincinnatus C. is frail, he is passive, he is a hero without knowing or acknowledging it: he fights with his instincts, and his acts of writing are his means of escape." He is a hero because he refuses to become like all the rest." Not just our reality but also our fiction had taken on this curious coloration in a world where the censor was the poet's rival in rearranging and reshaping reality, where we simultaneously invented ourselves and were figments of someone else's imagination. In Vietnam: Nothing ever dies it states, "Wars are as complex as individuals, but are remembered by names that tell us as little as the names of individuals do." In this case the lack of individualism is referring to wars instead of a person. This statement is made to say that wars have more to them than the surface fight, however, they get minimized to the country or place that took the most hits whether good or bad.

The judgmental tone in Salvador Allende's farewell speech helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society by showing how other forces of power rule out what you would somewhat call a 'good' government that cares about its people. In lines 27-31 "I address the man of Chile, the worker, the farmer, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted, because in our country fascism has been already present for many hours — in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, in the face of the silence of those who had the obligation to act. They were committed. History will judge them." The phrase "the farmer, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted, because in our country fascism has been......" is used to judge and mock the people who are planning to take him out of office and their ill intentions that they have deemed as right. It contributes to a dystopian society because it shows the element of survival and how this new government will target certain groups to remain in power.

The frustrated and disappointed tone of the Salvador Allende "Farewell Speech" helps the reader understand life in a dystopian society by the extreme measures the president goes to, to protect his people and persecute so called treason and felony by his fellow Chileans. "My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government" Disloyal to an extreme government ruling, the president is forced to sacrificed himself leaving his people who were under his rule to fend for themselves due to betrayal. In his eyes "good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever. They have force and will be able to dominate us, but social processes can be arrested by neither crime nor force. Evidence: "My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, and who also has appointed himself Chief of the Carabineros [paramilitary police]."
Analysis: This quotation convey the TONE/ MOOD because he illustrates how people should pay for what they did and also he says that his words is not going to be used in "bitterness but disappointment."

Latin America and Chile are considered to be a dystopian society because it shows elements of survival and government control. "The people must defend themselves, but they must not sacrifice themselves. The people must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets, but they cannot be humiliated either". This shows survival because even after everything they were going through they were still trying to fight for what they have left.

Latin America and Chile in particular, demonstrated elements of a dystopian society because the people of Chile were left to survive under the corrupted government with the president's sacrifice. The president tells the people of Chile that they "must defend themselves, but they must not sacrifice themselves. The people must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets, but they cannot be humiliated" (lines 35-36). Survival is shown by the president's words for the people not to be targeted and killed by the government in the midst of this chaos. The president is hopeful the people will build a better society and survive not being killed over the oppressive government that will kill any who oppose them.

In Latin america a lot of the leaders where very corrupt and the people weren't given a voice one piece of evidence that backs up my claim is. in "Farewell speech" by Salvador Allende it is stated that "tradition, the tradition taught by General Schneider and reaffirmed by Commander Araya, victims of the same social sector who today are hoping, with foreign assistance, to re-conquer the power to continue defending their profits and their privileges." this shows that the government was forcing itself upon the people and the people had no choice but to listen

tone contributes to the speech Salvador Allende because he makes the main focus of how he is upset at the fact that there was betrayal towards him and his community. based on his speech he says "My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, " Mr.Mendoza had a a fidelity which is a belief demonstrated by continuing loyal and support showing that even through all the damage and all the destruction he was able to keep his part and still be loyal to his people by having there back.

The author finishes by expressing how horrible things are and why he is so dissatisfied in "Salvador Allende's Farewell Speech," and this helps the reader understand life in the dystopian society. The following is an example from the text: "My words do not have bitter, but disappointed. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government." The phrases he uses suggest that he is dissatisfied that the individuals he hardly trusts were able to get themselves into prominent positions.
