The people were constantly told that opposing the tsar was "an insult to god" as it was appointed by him. not only was the Church very influential, It made sure this message was expressed regularly to them. Since most of the Russian population was illiterate, they had to rely on what they were told by the Church. It was their only source of education and they had a tendency to believe the teachings of the priests.
