As if we had a choice ......

The last phrase the author used stating, "As if we had a choice" shows the act of dehumanization. As we live in everyday life, we have the joy of knowing that we are able to make our own choices and have freedom. Through this book the author showed the many ways that the Jewish inmates didn't have a choice in what they partook in. Whether that included clothing, housing, fooding, or the type of jobs they were given. In the concentration camps, you didn't have a choice. It was either, do what you get told or get killed. Simple.

During this time period we learned that many children in the concentration camps would get molested. The abuse, wasn't being done by the other kids but yet the german officers and adults. This was indeed taking away their privacy further dehumanizing them and showing the act of silence. In the concentration camps, it was kind of like the survival of the fittest. If you weren't as fit or did as you were told it was like death. So in exchange for extra food and survival, the children would kind of be numb to letting the officers abuse them.

This shows that his relationship with his father was changed from wanting to protect him to wondering why he couldn't have escaped wrath. The dentist's office was shut down since the dentist was to be hanged for dealing prisoner's gold teeth for personal gain. Elie didn't feel pity for him and was rather glad that he was getting hanged: he could keep his gold crown. Elie thought how he could use it to buy something, maybe bread, and goes on to explain how food had priority in his life. Because of the conditions in the camps, such as starvation, Elie was most concered with food, losing morales in place of survival.

The Father-Son relationship through this book has been through a lot during the first couple of chapters. But these quotes give us a good insight into how he was going to have to survive without his mother and sister. This made the father-son relationship intensify because there was no one else to keep them safe anymore.

This quote shows how the theme silence is exemplified and the way it shows the theme is by showing how he sat there watching one of the people that he loves most and the only person that he has left gets beaten and sat there saying and doing nothing. In the real world anyone would try and stop this or yell or do something but in the camps it is a different place and takes away the voice of others. This quote shows a good example of Father/Son relationship. It shows Elie not wanting to be separated from his father, when being transported to a new camp. When going somewhere new he only could rely and depend on his father. Once at the camps, Elie wouldn't speak up in fear of being beaten or killed, but in this moment he kind of felt safe enough to speak and and say, he wanted to stay with his father.

Elie is surprised that he didn't do anything, that just yesterday he would have "dug [his] nails into this criminal's flesh." The pressure of the situation makes Elie stay silent for he didn't want to receive the same treatment as his father. Fear forced him into silence, as it continues to do during his time in the camp(s).
