Also the author uses irony as a literary device to show Noha’s perseverance to survive. “He heard a metal clink onto the nearby rocks. The straw, he thought. His head knew he would be dead without it, but his body wouldn’t let him stop to pick it up.” This quote shows us that even the filtering straw being an essential piece to Noha being able to survive. His life is more important than that, there’s diverses risks if he tries to take the straw. If he dies in prol to recover the straw, who will filtrate the water? Thus he didn't glance at his back to not change his mind and keep the adrenaline flow through his body, to increase his change to make it out alive.
