This week I discovered that I had assumed the worst of one of my students [which was that he was indifferent towards school when in fact he's arguably a scientific prodigy]

Kids are so centered around quick, fun, and interactive things because of their devices at home. I definitely need to try to find ways to add these types of activities that tap into student's talents and interests. I think small activities that are more for fun can be the most important when it comes to building that culture and getting to know one another.

Find ways of building more emotional connections with students beyond the classroom so that they will be more likely to share they interests with you. Use office hours or after school time to just talk with them and make them feel like you are more than just a person to impart information, but also wisdom and kindness.

Anthony if you show your students who you really are they will meet you half way. I had a hard time at the beginning of the school year with building a relationship but once I start talking to the student prior to class and working with them during office hours we were able to connect.

I have a friend who loves to get into "inquiry projects" of all sorts. One time, it was cooking; another time, it was golf. When he did it, he was all in. Wondering how individualized/tailored "inquiry projects" could be built into your classroom and curriculum?

This reminds me of what we learned in Geena's class- if we have low expectations for students they will meet them because we don't push them or give them the right amount of attention. This just goes to show we have to push students if they aren't meeting their full potential. This is definitely something I remind myself of- calling on different students, not just the ones who always volunteer.
