The word temuan derives from temu, to meet. It means a crossroads or convergence or a plateau where all faces of a mountain meet. There is every likelihood that the Temuan are actually a synthetic group, a genetic fusion of several aboriginal tribes with Sumatran and Javanese migrants.

The Temuan sub-tribe of Orang Asli belongs to the Proto Malay main tribe. 

They live in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Pahang and Johor

The Temuan community is led by Tok Batin or The Spiritual Leader.

The leader is appointed by the law of Inheritance, the appointment is based on his extensive knowledge of the tribal customs

If the Tok Batin commits any transgression, then he will be stripped and a new Tok Batin will be appointed

The minister to the Tok Batin is skilled in Tribal customs, but cannot pass sentences.

Tok Jenang is the head of the Tribal custom council and can pass light sentences.

Tok Batin has the authority to appoint Chief upon the arrival of the Tribal Custom Council.

The Chief ensure the well-being of the whole tribe.

A basic traditional Temuan belief is that their God and ancestors are always present with them, guarding their safety. At the end of every year, the Temuans celebrate Aik Gayak Muyang (Ancestor Day in English). This celebration is to thank their God and ancestors for the crops they grow and for the peaceful life they have had. And their art and religion are connected .


Their art reflected that. From my finding  I found two picture which represents their culture,  religion and history .

Their animism takes the form of taboos, herbal remedies, ritual ceremonies and magic. They have dukun(healers) and a villagebomoh (shaman) who, when in a trance state, communicates with the nature spirits
Ancestral worship or Islam (predominantly) and a significant population practice Christianity.

some Orang Asli teachers
Students who continued after three years went to central primary schools in larger Orang Asli
communities where they could continue through primary six. Most of the teachers were Malays provided
by the MOE. 
Students who passed their exams at the end of sixth grade could go to normal government secondary
schools in nearby rural or urban areas. 
Continue to their UPSR,PMR and SPM accordingly.

Student who drop out of school are given work.
Boys help their father to hunt, gather food and go out in the forest.
Girls help their mothers in taking care of the household, cooking food, weaving clothes, making jewellery.

They grew some subsistence crops, hunted and gathered in nearby forests, and fished in rivers. In the past, their main economic activity was cultivating irrigated rice. The Temuan villagers were skillful rice planters, experienced in engineering skills needed to regulate the flow of water to the fields.
Temuan are involved in planting seedlings in compact nursery plots, hoeing the main fields, and constructing dikes and canals. Increasing contact with the "outside world" has caused many Temuan villages, like some other Orang Asli groups, to turn from being sedentary rice farmers to become nomads living in uncertainty.

Some traditional superstitions still held by Temuans:

  1. Respect for their elders ; bad luck is said to strike those who fail in this.
  2. They do not praise a baby, in the belief that it would make the child sick and die.
  3. If a Temuan is travelling and a little rain falls, he must slip a leaf into his ear to protect himself on his journey.
  4. If a Temuan desires something he cannot get, he must say pinah hunan and put their saliva on his neck, in the belief that failure to do so would result in an accident.
  5. A Temuan who must leave a meal in a hurry without eating food must tempot (touch the food to his skin) before leaving, in the belief that failure to do so would result in an accident or death.
  6. A murderer will be haunted by his victim's ghost.
  7. Stay away from a place that was haunted, to avoid being disturbed by an evil spirit
