Honestly speaking, I was quite fond of it at the very first time I listened to it by chance. The melody at the beginning did fascinate me immediately. It makes me spontaneously feel curious about what is going to happen next. Another point worth mentioning is that the film clip is of a typical sense of art. By which I mean, uniqueness and creation have been exhibited through it as far as I am consider. When it comes to lyrics, the general meaning is not hard to understand. It is about romance.

There is no exaggeration to say that this song is basically my kind of thing. Since I am not addicted to those heavy metal or rock n roll things. I reckon that the general tone and melody of it is suitable for those people who prefer quite and relaxing music.

This song portrayed a man's emotion after he had to end up the relationship with his loved girl even though reluctantly. The man is deeply stuck with the grief after break-up by noticing that girl is not caring about him anymore. The lyrics are mostly of narrative style which is the reason for clear impression and understanding given to listeners like me.

To some degree, the lyrics can be interpreted as the secretive inner worlds of a girl and a boy after they broke up. Unimaginable sadness came to the boy due to the girl's indifference and misunderstand. There were obviously some issues happening between them. Both of them involved failed to solve the situation they were confronted with, which gives rise to break-ups and this incredible song.
Reference:
Boy" So when we found that we could not make sense."
Girl"Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over"

Based on what I searched online, Gotye stated that the song was "definitely drawn from various experiences I've had in relationships breaking up". So it matches what I though of it. This song is undoubtedly the reflection of multiple past relationships. Explicit process of what they were, how they broke up, what's going on in everyone's minds are almost described in-between the words. In the aftermath and memory of bygone relationships, the lyrics resonate with a particular part of listeners.
