The Central and Pacific lines meeting point was located at Promontory Point, Utah. Chinese and Irish immigrants were credited the most with building the Transcontinental Railroad. George Pullman was a man who was interested in passenger travel. He noticed that the railroad cars were uncomfortable, dirty, cramped, and unsatisfactory. So, in 1865 he invented the first sleeper car. His remodeling was created to be a better sleeper, and more comfortable. The requested for the government to regulate railroad shipping rates, as well as increasing money supply and charging income tax. Another reform they plead for was an election for US senators, rather than them being appointed. During an election in the 1800s, 5 Senators, 3 Governors and 1,500 State Legislatures, were elected; all being apart of the Populist Party. Farmers were able to work easier due to advancements in farming equipment. This also allowed the to harvest more crops. Another benefit was the railroads. Railroads allowed them to ship goods quicker, as well as reach new markets to sell their crops. Some negative things that came from this was farmers unintended overproduction. This caused prices to decline, and hurt their profits. Although railroads were helpful to farmers, they also were harmful. Railroad companies grossly overcharged farmers. Time zones were instituted in 1883 due to this. They were created for two main reasons, to establish arrival times & to avoid collisions. It took a while to enforce time zones due to stubborn towns.
