8. The tone of the story is serious. “Mr. Avery stares at Simon in slack-jawed horror for a second, then turns to me.” The tone was stated on page 218. You can tell it is serious because it didn’t have any other emotion, and it happened in a serious situation.

There are many different settings. The settings are Bayview High School, Glenn’s diner, Marshall’s Peak, Bayview Estates, and Eastland High’s parking lot. Bayview High is an important setting because it is where the main characters (Nate, Bronwyn, Addy, and Cooper), and it is where Simon was killed at. Glenn’s diner is important because Nate finally met his mother after she surprises him for being sober. Marshall’s Peak is where Nate and Bronwyn ran to avoid news vans. Bayview Estates is where the group talks about what they remember about the day Simon died.

The point of his is first person, but it changes views. One chapter I’d be in Bronwyn‘s view, but next it’d be in Nate’s. “Addy looks at me without answering. I don’t blame her.”

The protagonist in the book is Nate. Nate was on probation with his lawyer that kept an eye on him. He’s loving, smart, and wise. Nate was helping the group throughout the investigation to avoid the news vans, and the questioning from students. Jake, addy’s ex boyfriend, stuffed the missing EPI pens into his locker. So, Nate was put into jail even though he’s innocent. He’s the protagonist because he was innocent even when he was called the bad guy.

The antagonist in the book is Jake. He’s controlling, manipulative, and is a liar. He was in a relationship with Addy, and acted like she didn’t cheat on him. He was waiting for the right time, and when she told the truth, he went and beat her up. He helped Simon with the murder. Simon actually poisoned himself, and had a whole plan out. Jake continued the plan, and stuffed the EPI pens into the locker, and made Nate go to jail.

The conflict is external. Nate was accused and was put into juvenile jail. The characters try and figure out how to get him out because he wasn’t the murderer. It took many lawyers, and police to get him out. The resolution is when they found out he wasn’t the murderer, and he got out.

The theme of the story is the murder. The message in the book is about suicide awareness. The author had struggled with thoughts so she decided to do a book about it. The murder was actually a suicide awareness thing because it’s to spread about how words actually hurt people’s feelings.

One figure of speech in my book is a metaphor. The sentence I found was, “Simon leans forward with his elbows on the desk, looking spring-loaded and ready to pounce on fresh gossip.” It’s a metaphor because he can’t actually pounce on gossip. He’s just waiting for the group to spill some of the gossip.

I would definitely recommend this book. It’s exciting with all the unexpected events that happen. It’s a mystery you really have to think about, and you don’t expect the ending. It’s a good book if you’re into thriller and love surprises. It has real life events that do happen to teenagers also.
