Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

This stage is all about developing trust. Being completely dependent on parents/adults leaves this stage of development up to the quality of their care. Quality care and nourishment leads to the development of trust.

I developed trust through the quality care of my parents. The "crisis" during this stage was completely averted for me in my childhood.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Decision making, motor skills, and the beginning of independence are the goals of this stage. By allowing a child to make choices and learn their body you are setting them up for a confident future.

I was a wild young man and am told that I would take falls, jump off things, run into wall, etc. By learning these hard lessons of independence I feel secure and confident in myself.

Stage 3: Initiative vs Guilt

Not only the ability to work with others, but the ability to lead a group or group activity is the goal of this stage. If a child does not find success through this stage they will develop a sense of guilt

The beginning years of my sports career were crucial in this stage, and allowed me to develop a very initiative personality. I began to work on leadership and the ability to work with others. This early success in sports and group activities I was able to avoid developing a sense of guilt.

Stage 5: Identity vs Confusion

This is where a child finds a sense of personal identity or self. This stage will set the stage for the rest of a persons life. Through success and encouragement identity will be found. Through failure of this stage a child will develop a weak sense of self.

My personal experience with this stage was also very smooth and the crisis was avoided. Through proper encouragement and character development I developed a strong personal identity. Sports, academics, and my social life were all very good and helped as well.

Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation

The building blocks of family and love will be developed during this stage. Loving relationships will lead to an intimate lifestyle. Shallow and non-important relationships will lead to a lonely and isolate future.

This is the current stage I am in, and I am still developing and trying to figure out this stage. I fear that I developed a lot of weak relationships, and that they are no longer around. I find myself wanting intimacy, but needing isolation.

Stage 4: Industry vs Inferiority

Children must begin developing a sense of pride, begin to set goals, and begin accomplishing things. Being successful and in a good social environment helps through this stage. If a child has a bad social environment, no goals, and lack in success this will lead to inferiority.

My parents, teachers, and coaches were an amazing support system. They were very supportive and would commend me for my accomplishments. This would allow me to begin to believe in myself and develop competence. My support system would allow me t avoid this crisis completely and not become inferior.

Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation

Focused on career and family we look to build our lives. To be successful at this stage we must feel that we are productive and contributing to something greater than ourself. Being active in community, family, and the world help with this stage. Failure through this stage will lead to an unproductive lifestyle and adulthood.

Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair

We must be able to look back on our life and have a sense of accomplishment. Are we happy with our life when we look back or are we frustrated with what we are leaving behind. This stage is at the end of our lives and we will either be filled with Integrity or Despair.
