As it was said in the book, the rivalry between the greasers and Socs got way worse when Johnny killed Bob, and I think that everyone needed to have a small fight to get rid of all the tension. They were all in really rough situations and I think having that aggression that all of the members are so used to, helped them. You could see at the end of the fight, how proud Two-bit was and how they felt accomplished, and it did slightly lift their spirits. Even if Randy and Pony were mature enough to have a conversation, I don't think the rest of the members may be. Although, I don't think the rumble was necessary to settle the situation, since Greasers will be Greasers and Socs will be Socs.
