Alexus Lloyd

The use of social media can promote a culture of digital connections is so many ways! A huge way that digital connections help between parents and teachers is through emails. A lot of schools now offer websites that post the students grades that parents have access too. This is a huge tool for parents that are wanting to be involved in their children lives, but the busy work schedules that parents have can make that difficult. This website allows them to go home and view what their child’s grades are looking like. Another way that parents can get involved is by their child going home and showing their parents the activities that they did through technology. It will allow the students to continue learning and studying, but also allow the parents to see what their child learned that day. School administration can really stand behind teachers and give them the access and knowledge to use and teach technology. I believe technology promotes involvement with schools. Technology is such a huge part of our society today. More times than not, parents, students, and staff would rather use technology than anything else.

These ideas could be shared through website, email, twitter, facebook accounts, or through other forms of social media! I do believe that sharing these ideas through technology would support buy-ins and support. I believe it is important to share through technology what is going on in schools and in the district. People like to be involved and this would allow that. The stakeholders wouldn’t have to go through any forms of communications or trying to talk to people, they can easily access it themselves with no trouble. It is all at the fingertips where they can refer back to it if needed.

I believe a huge problem that could arise would be that some people might not think it was very personable or one-on-one. I believe with the use of technology there will be a select few that will find anything wrong with it. I will say that sometimes I think there is a fine line between what should be shared through technology and what deserves a face-to-face communication. I believe that would be something that would have to be addressed and strongly talked about. I think a social and etiquette class of the norms and proper way to communicate through technology would be beneficial. I believe sometimes through technology it is easy to get “slack” in communication. Technology also allows people to read into things and form assumptions that are false. For example, I communicated with a parent at the daycare I work at through text message about her son needing an extra change of clothes to leave at the daycare. There was no ill intent in my text or any negative emotion, but because I put an exclamation mark in the text message the parent felt as if I was trying to yell at her. I text with exclamation marks all the time so I didn’t think anything of it, but she took offense. Small things like that can create problems that aren’t really necessary. I believe there would need to be someone to help monitor all the accounts that were having posts on them to filter out the bad or negative ones. It is important to make sure that the social media accounts or any other form of communications or technology stay clean and appropriate.

It would be very important to advertise. Maybe handouts of some sort telling the families about the new technology they are using and the websites. I believe a huge thing when incorporating technology is making sure the parents are involved. It is also important to make it as “user friendly” and as accessible as possible. Branding and making themselves know could open a lot of door for opportunities to do more in the community and get their name out. The consequences would be not growing, learning, or building their business like they could or like they should. A huge factor in all of this, I believe, is to be consistent and continue learning.
