Fountain, by Patty Chang, is a performance art piece that explores themes of identity, self-reflection, and transformation. In the piece, Chang fills a fountain with water and immerses herself in it, representing a baptism or a ritual of rebirth. Through this performance, Chang invites viewers to reflect on their own identity and how it has been shaped by societal norms and expectations. The audience is also asked to consider how they can actively redefine their identity and embrace a process of transformation.

Bjork's work has explored the concept of strength in vulnerability through her music, lyrics, and artwork. Her song "Hyperballad" (1995) is a prime example of her exploration of this concept, as it reflects on the idea of the beauty and strength that can exist in vulnerability. The song's lyrics describe a woman who stands on a mountain and throws things off the edge, as a metaphor for the strength she finds in releasing her fears and vulnerabilities.

Wong Kar Wai's love trilogy

Wong Kar Wai's films explore fragility and power by showing characters who are struggling to find balance in their lives. In his films, he often juxtaposes scenes of strength and fragility, showing how both can coexist in a person. He also explores how the power of love can be both fragile and powerful at the same time. In Chungking Express, two characters are forced to confront their own fragility when they realize that they are in love with each other. In In the Mood for Love, the characters struggle to find a balance between their desire for love and the power of societal expectations. The film also examines the power of memory, as the characters are constantly reminded of the fragility of their relationship as it exists in the past. In 2046, again, the focus is on the fragility of love and how it can have a powerful influence on one's life. Finally, in The Grandmaster, the power of martial arts is explored, with the characters showing their strength and fragility in equal measure.

The Nomadsland Exploration into Vulnerability captivated me in its ability to explore the complexity of vulnerability in a way that is both emotional and systemic. The film uses both real people and actors to display objective truths that can often be overlooked when looking at systemic oppression and political contexts. It is particularly powerful for me, as a viewer, to be able to witness the stories of real people and their experiences, as it allows me to have a deeper understanding of the issues that are being discussed. The film also addresses the emotional side of vulnerability by exploring the feelings of insecurity, fear, and uncertainty that come with living in an unstable political environment. The film does a great job of conveying the psychological effects of this type of oppression and how it can affect a person's daily life. I particularly appreciated how the film used a combination of interviews and storytelling to effectively portray the demographics reality of life. The Nomadsland Exploration into Vulnerability provides an important perspective on the effects of systemic oppression and its psychological effects that are often overlooked.

It provides a unique insight into the complex and multifaceted nature of human emotions, thoughtfully exploring the power of vulnerability and how it can help us to better understand ourselves and those around us. Through its innovative combination of animation, music and dialogue, the show creates a vivid, emotionally charged experience that resonates with me. The show's exploration of vulnerability is deeply thought-provoking and ultimately encourages us to embrace our own vulnerability and use it to our advantage. Ultimately, the Midnight Gospel's exploration into vulnerability is a powerful reminder of the importance of being open and honest with ourselves and those around us.

In some cultures, such as those of the Pacific Northwest, shamans were believed to be able to change their gender, an idea that is still present in many Native American cultures. Among the Zapotec of Mexico, some individuals were thought to inhabit both genders simultaneously.

I have always been fascinated by Simone de Beauvoir's writings and her critical approach to gender roles. I was particularly intrigued by her concept of masculinity in terms of vulnerability and how traditional ideas of masculinity often prevent individuals from being open to vulnerability. She argued that men often use their stature as a barrier to avoid feeling vulnerable, causing a feeling of emptiness or alienation. She also noted that this need to be in control can lead to feelings of powerlessness, as men are unable to access their own emotions and be more accepting of the vulnerabilities that come with being human.

In my work I am currently exploring an overarching theme of finding strength in vulnerability through a personal lense. Going into my fmp i want to narrow down this topic and explore ideas of masculinity and how that relates to ideas of what society calls ‘strength’ and how we define it, as a ‘masculine’ trait, but also vulnerability and my relationship with the two, how in this case what is personal and political becomes conjoined, and how as a queer person mien (and many others) relationship with gender is an incredibly complex and fascinating topic. Gender itself is a construct, for some, a confine which is constantly changing and evolving modern society continues to change as well.

Throughout my work during fine art specialism I have heavily explored ideas around vulnerability and strength. Using exposure of self in order to create an almost cathartic experience through my work, is something I definitely want to carry with me into my FMP. Although having done a very similar brief already, there is a lot of ground to cover and I don't feel low on ideas, the introduction of a focus on my experience with masculinity as a queer person will be an avid source of inspiration. The presence of Gender in my work is something that has appeared in and out of my practice. Being very interested in the Gaze, and Queer Presence I found the dynamic between subject and viewer/participant across mediums a very interesting playground to traverse. Really asking who I make my art for led me to direct my work in a more personal direction, telling my own story and exposing personal parts of me,even including my own nude body, but also childhood photos I have created art for many different types of audiences and having that wider range of spectatorship experiences over foundation has become a crucial part of my fine art practice.
