Literal Journey- Yanek and his family like in Krakow, Poland. But in just a blink of an eye, their city was invaded by the Germans beginning WW11. For now, Yanek and his family remain in Krakow. For a little while they stay in their flat with several other families. Anti-Semitic rules have been put in place that persecute Jewish people, taking away any rights they had. Over time, walls are built up around the ghetto to contain the remaining Jews who have not been taken for resettlement or deportation yet. One-by-one many Jews were relocated to other Jewish ghettos, work camps, concentration camps or were killed on site.

Figurative Journey- Yanek is starting to feel stressed because of the war and how crowded it is in the flat because of all of the families that moved into their flat with them due to losing their homes. Also, he is feeling scared because the nazis took over his hometown these nazis started to knock on the door and force them to open it. Yanek and his family didn't open the door but they waited for a few mintues after those couple of minutes go by somebody finally opens the door because they do not want to get killed.

Literal Journey: When yanek arrived at buchenwalf he sees that all the prisoners are terrified he carries rocks learning to carry a stoner just the right size if it was too large and you dropped it then the nazis would shoot you for being too lazy. Some of the Jews were chained to carts and they were whipped like they were animals or something. yanek got introduced to the Buchenwald zoo it is a fenced-in area that has deer, monkeys, and bears for the guards and their families entertainment. Yanek starts to wonder if the children and their mothers think of he Jews as animals too. One day, the nazis would give the prisoners raw steak that would usually be fed to the bears but instead, they would drop the raw steak in the mud between 2 men and made them fight for it.

Figurative Journey: Yanek feels that the animals get treated better than the people. He believes that its cruel what the SS officers tied to the fence so the deer wouldn't go anywhere.

Literal Journey- When Yanek arrived in Aushwitz there were a bunch of families lined up some of them were to the right and others were to the left. If you goot sent to the left you couldn't work so you had to die but if you got sent to the right you had to work. Yanek sees on of the families tell the 10 year old son that he has to say lie and tell them he is 15 and healthy in order to stay alive. He didn't say anything since he knew that they had to say that so he could stay alive. Yanek had found a friend but that friend had passed away him and his friend would do almost everything together they talked about they haven't spoke about in a while. Yanek had spoke about this family and what had happened to them he hesitated to talk about this life because he remember what his uncle moshe told him " no name no friends no family no nothing" but he hadn't had a friend since the day he had found the crawl space under the floor and him and his 2 other friends would rest down there to get out of doing work.

Figurative Journey: Yanek felt sad when his friend passed away due to him and his friend doing everything together he felt grateful and happy to have had that friend who stuck by his side and made sure he didn't feel alone. This friend made it easier for Yanek to be here.

Literal Journey: Yanek was good at doing his job, which was being a tailor. He was forced to do a different job that was cleaning his hometown and searching for jewelry. When he was cleaning his hometown, he stopped back at home, where he would stay with his parents and the rest of his family. Then, remembered his mom sewed money into all of their coats, and he found 1,000 zlotys. He then went back to the camp and told his uncle about the money his uncle then bought bread and then hid the money. Shortly after his uncle had passed away, so now Yanek has to find that money in order to try and survive.

Figurative Journey: While Yanek was cleaning he found his old neighbors dead body, he was thinking about all the old memories and how much he had missed his family. He missed how his life was before the nazis took over his hometown.

Literal Journey: Yanek had gotten put onto a truck with 50 other prisoners they were being taken to an industrial looking building. Yanek feels as if he knows one of the other men so he asked the man if he was from Krakow he then responded saying no and then said no one. When the prisoners were getting led into the building by the SS officals yanek realized that the entrance is an enormous mine, he then gets into an elevator but when he does one of the prisoners that were in there along with him said this place must be the Wieliczka salt mine. When they get out of the elevator the prisoners got a tour of the mine the kapo shows them where they will be sleeping and then shows where they will be working. The kapo warns the prisoners that even though it seems easy to escape they would never make it back and would die due to starvation, dehydration, and etc.

Figurative Journey: In the beginning, Yanek felt confused because he had no idea where he was being taken too. All he knew was that he is going to an enormous salt mine when a prisoner had pointed it out.

Yanek got transferred to tzebinia shortly after he had arrived at the salt mine he thinks the camp he is at now which is trzebinia camp is the worst one out of all the other ones he has been too because the officers like to play games they treat the prisoners like there entertainment toys.

Figurative Journey: Yanek is mad that the SS officers are making them take the rocks back and fourth and play games like how the prisoners thought they were done but then the SS officers told them to do it again.

Yanek feels like its some sort of torture he thinks that they are trying to make the prisoners panic of make them go mad. When the train doors finally open the guards marched the prisoners too a building. Yanek started to cry because he wishes that he had let the nazis kill him back at the ghetto. In chapter 17 a man in yaneks barrack announces that there is a boy who is 13 and he asks if they can throw a mitzvah. yanel offers help because he realizes how important that would be to the boy another man agrees with yanek 10 people offered to participate he started to realize that he is only a few years older than the boy. When it was the end of the of the mitzvah yanek went up to the boy and handed him a small wooden horse as a gift.

Figurative Journey: Yanek feels sad because he is starting to regret not letting the nazis kill him back.

Literal Journey: When yanek and the other prisoners arrived at Bergen-Belsen the commandant looked disappointed about how skinny all the prisoners were. He started to point at the prisoners to seperate them all up. yanek didn't get picked but then he realized that was kind of a good thing he didn't get picked because the people who got picked are gunned down they got chosen because they were the weakest, not the strongest. But then, the commandant said that they can work for a week to get their strength back. One of the days yanel was working and a kapo called him the kapo who called him over had a large round face covered in scars, the akpo punches yanek in the face for no reason he said that yanek looked funny, his nose starts to bleed. one of the other prisoners told yanek that his name was moon face and that he killed 3 men before the war started.

Figurative Journey: Yanek felt devastated when he didn't get picked but then he realized what was happening to the prisoners who did get picked. He thought it was a trick but the commandant was telling the truth. When yanel got punched he was confused and probably in pain since his nose started to bleed. yanek began to feel stronger from eating soup and bread but he said that the soup was the thickest soup that he had.

He slept as much as he could because he didn't want to think about the starvation. He hears the planes flying over the train and the bombs exploding nearby. For a second yanek wanted the bombs to hit the train so the nightmare would finally end. One of the kapos interrupts yaneks reverie he asked where his top button was on the shirt he was wearing/ he didn't even realize that it was missing until the kapo pointed it out he answers and say I don't know. The kapo told yanek that there was a penality for losing the button it would be 20 lashes the kapo hit yyanek with a whip and told him to start counting in polish he started to count but then he said them wrong so they kept restarting and starting over again.

Figarutive Journey:
