Common mammals

White-tailed deer: Visitors often see these in the woodlands and along trails.
Beaver: Beavers are active in the wetland areas and can sometimes be spotted swimming in the ponds.
Muskrat: Like beavers, muskrats are at home in the preserve's marsh habitat.
Eastern cottontail rabbit: These can often be found in the wooded and grassland areas.
Foxes: Both red and gray foxes inhabit the uplands.
Bats: Various species of bats live in the preserve's woodlands.
Chipmunk and squirrels: These are commonly seen along the wooded trails.

Notable birds

Waterfowl: Many species of ducks, geese, and swans can be found in the marsh and ponds, including the Canada goose.
Marsh birds: Tifft provides crucial nesting habitat for rare marsh birds like the least bittern and pied-billed grebe.
Herons and egrets: Sightings are frequent, and include the great blue heron, green heron, and great egret.
Migratory songbirds: The preserve is a vital stopover site, with many varieties of warblers passing through in spring and fall.
Raptors and owls: Migratory raptors pass through, and resident owls, such as the eastern screech-owl and snowy owl, are sometimes spotted.
Woodpeckers: Several types, such as the red-bellied woodpecker and downy woodpecker, can be seen in the woodlands.

Reptiles and amphibians

Turtles: Common sightings include painted turtles basking on logs.
Snakes: The common garter snake is frequently encountered.
Frogs: Many species of frogs live in and around the ponds.
Hybrid salamanders: The preserve is home to a fascinating hybrid of Jefferson and blue-spotted salamanders.

Fish

Warmwater species: The ponds, connected to Lake Erie, contain fish such as carp, largemouth bass, and yellow perch.

The preserve was once a landfill, but in 1976 it was restored into a thriving nature refuge.
It contains Erie County’s largest cattail marsh (75 acres).
Over 260 bird species have been recorded here, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise.
Tifft covers 264 acres of marshes, meadows, woodlands, and ponds—just 5 minutes from downtown Buffalo!
Visitors can explore 5 miles of trails and 3 scenic boardwalks with viewing blinds.
