Most competitive leagues in the world with different sports has a sponsor within the name such as: Barclays Premier League (football), Npower test series (cricket). It is always easier to get sponsorship if a sport or event receives media attention. High profile events gain greater amounts of sponsorship than those with no coverage. the reason why Nike sponsored Brazil in the world cup 98, and this is because no other team came close to how good Brazil was, meaning that they would be in the tournament all the way to the final and more then likely win it. and Nike sponsored them instead of a team like France because Brazil would go further and the longer Brazil were in then the longer the shirts would be seen by millions of people worldwide which will sponsor Nike and gain more sales which means more money.

there is over 100 million pounds transferred from Nike to Brazil when Brazil signed the sponsorship contract. this was known as the largest sponsorship ever for a national team. out of the 100 million, 20 million was in cash, and the rest was spent on the youth team and the training facilities. they did this so that the future brazilian team will be as good as they are if not better as they will have used better training facilities.

positives and negatives of commercialisation

one positive is that it gives big companies the chance to sponsor clubs and this is good because it gives the clubs better funding which means the quality of the sport gets larger to the different players signed and the training facilities. another positive is that if the clubs sponsor aa good team that is playing well then it gives them more money as the club is advertising the company earning them a reputation and money.

One negative of commercialisation is that it puts doubt into the players mind and will make them feel anxious as they will be watched closely and they will be under alot of media attention. Another negative and one of the main negatives for commercilisation for fans is that the ticket prices will go up and so will the team shirts as they will be a bigger company especially companies such as nike, adidas etc
