Then they suggested some rules they would like to have and follow during the program in a democratic way by voting. They were showing thumbs up or down to vote. If the majority had their thumbs up, the rule passed. This process helped the participants to get integrated into the discussion where they found pathes to come to agreement by respecting each other’s opinions. Then they were introduced the rules that are already set for the program and the hostel.

One group was to build the highest tower with the chairs in the room and the other group was to make the biggest circle with the chairs. After the game the participants had long discussion of the game to reflect upon their strategies they used or missed while playing. They understood that they had poor cooperation with one another as a team. They also understood that they were playing ruled by their selfish instincts and not wisely and with the team and that make the perfect introduction of the concept of tragedy of the commons.

This game was taken seriously by the group and many ideas and thoughts arose after it:

/ Fast pace and fun game but different rules near the each table were hard to understand at first.

/ Such questions as should I follow my rules or the ones at the table were the main for the game participants. Was hard to say what exactly were happening at first when new people were joining the table with apparently different understanding of the game rules. Some people who were joining the tables adapted to the rules at the table, others were letting newcomers to lead the game.

/ It took couple of people’s changes for them starting to understand that there are different game rules that people are following.

/ How it affects the real life? Different rules applies to different places (country, university, ect.). It reveals how acceptive we are and interested in learning in different conditions/environment. Not everything is just black or white, so we need to be flexible in accepting others’ rules and trying to adapt ours.

/ Speaking ban obstacle shows that sometimes it is hard to express yourself. It may result in feeling confused, angry and as a stranger. However for somebody it was not hard to adapt to this.

/ How people did manage to win even when following different rules? Some let others to go to the next table (the winner) sometimes in democratic ways, sometimes because they didn’t want to be in a place where they will be strangers at the new table. Whereas some were trying to convince they are right and have won.

/ Another thing is that some people managed to find somebody who was willing to explain the rules at the table even without the words.

/ The idea came for one of the group member that it would be harder to play if not one but more people would move to the next table.

/ How all this applies to our everyday life? Many immigrants are coming and this process goes faster than fluent adaptation. It can also be applied to young people trying to include themselves into the system that has been made long ago. Not always we can easily adapt to changes. Because we feel unsafe and unsecured. However, it can goes to the advantage of yours because you became more efficient and critical. It’s like music – when you resonate, you can create something special. It’s also about listening to each others, newcomers and old ones because there is no right or wrong, it’s about compromise.
