“educators can work together to ensure equitable access and opportunity for all students to achieve”

I find this sentence from the MTSS definition particularly powerful because it emphasizes the ultimate goal of any support given to students with special needs. Equitable access and opportunity are the primary goals when supporting students achievement, and as the definition also states, students achieve is the reason systems such as MTSS are in place. I also think this quote is important because it argues that the method to supporting students achievement is through educators working together. It is vital that a team of educators work collaboratively to best support students on all levels. It must be a team effort if we want to give students the best assistance available.

“Integrating a data collection and assessment system, including universal screening, diagnostics and progress monitoring, to inform decisions appropriate for each tier of service delivery”

It is crucial for teachers to be informed of student learning to determine the direction of instruction and intervention. The power of assessment lies in the knowledge of student progress. Often, assessment have a negative connotation because as teachers we believe our students are more than a test score. However, formative assessments are a great resource for teachers to constantly monitor progress and adapt groupings, individualized plans, and resources needed for all students. In addition to identifying student needs, data collection can also help determine if an intervention strategy is effective. The adaptation of intervention tailored by formative assessment, data collection, and a universal systemic resource, allow students to receive the supports they need within the MTSS.
