What do you say about a gentleman who came into our lives with so much to offer than we could reciprocate. We thought he needed help, but we, in turn, ended up benefiting and getting blessed by his presence. Mr. Winston, Doc or buddy as we referred to him was full of humor and always ready to smile to take the stress off a situation. Many a time, he would remind us how he was a well learned lawyer who needed to get into his red 🚘 and go help his clients. He often would tell us over and over, how much his daughters meant to him, and always looked forward to those visits. Mr. Winston, you have rested from our presence, but the many sweet moments we shared, will forever remain in our hearts, reminding us that you had a heart of gold, touching those who crossed your path with your love for a life of service, love for your family and an infectious smile that would brighten any dull day. Buddy you will be missed.

Though we didn’t see Uncle Winston much he always found a way to make up for that time. During our last family gathering we sat down and he asked about everybody. He showed genuine interest in the wellbeing of all. He even handed out business cards. Still wanting to maintain a connection. Always offering assistance and encouragement. My mother (Annette) and the rest of the Henrys are so blessed to have known him and blessed to call him family. He was truly unique.

Words cannot describe the incredible human being this world lost last night. I met Winston one evening my freshman year of high school. He and my mom came and watched one of my high school tennis matches. He came up to me afterwards and handed me a Caramelo candy bar and told me he was impressed by my game. I was impressed he knew my favorite candy! It became a running theme for years that he would bring me chocolate whenever he came over. Winston was a proud and brilliant man. He immigrated to the US from Trinidad and practiced law in Camden, NJH. Able to speak seven languages, he was an amazing conversationalist and a great travel companion for my mom. He was an even better dancer! Whenever he heard music, he would whisk my mother up to the dance floor and twirl her around, both of them laughing and having fun. And he had moves! He has been there for every graduation, every family vacation, and holiday since I was a teenager. He became a pillar of our family. A year and a half ago, he and my mother were traveling to Cape Cod and my mom noticed that Winston was more forgetful than usual and seemed disoriented. When they got home from that trip, Winston went to the doctor and was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. We have been losing Winston to his disease steadily over the last eighteen months. Last night, he died peacefully with his two daughters by his side. I love you Winston. Your infectious laugh and smile will be so missed. Rest in paradise.

My deepest condolences to Toni, Kemba and their families. I had the privilege of spending time with Dr. Extavour during the celebration of Kemba and Jason's wedding. And of course, the chance to learn more about him through the legendary stories shared with us each time we had an opportunity to visit with the Taylor family.

He never knew it, but the wedding speech he delivered literally changed the course of my family's life. He said they chose to only have two children because it gave him the opportunity to give them both "the very best". After listening to his message, delivered in his truly unique and charismatic way, we quietly assessed the success of his two daughters....on all metrics. Character. Education. Values. Discipline. Family focus...we immediately agreed we'd be lucky if our two sons we just a fraction of this...and committed to try to do the exact same thing with them going forward. It made all the difference.

Will keep the family in our prayers and reflect with gratitude on our chance to meet and learn from such a great example. Love you all.

Winston “Ex” Extavour and I were close friends from high school, St Mary’s College, a friendship that was cemented during our undergrad years in the UWI, St. Augustine and endured after, impervious to the vagaries of circumstances and the erosion of distance. He left Geneva where he was studying and at my request came to Bordeaux to be the godfather of my second daughter, and left New Jersey many times to spend weekends at my house in New Orleans. There was an auto ad that urged one to “grab life by the horns.” For me there was no greater embodiment of this exhortation than my friend and brother. He never settled: he always saw another goal beyond the horizon and went for it. ….. and succeeded by sheer grit and determination. He stood out in all the social circles he migrated to, his hyper energy, booming laugh and sharp intellect impacting all. I personally benefitted from these attributes through our friendship and it is with a sad heart that I bid farewell to my friend and offer the sincerest condolences of my wife Priscilla and myself to his family. RIP Ex.

We think often that as life goes we might have missed knowing this beautiful vibrant human being: Winston Extavour, the diplomat, the disciplined dancer, the scholar, the outspoken.

We met Winston and his beautiful family in Brasilia, Brazil in 1980 where we both had diplomatic assignments: he representing Trinidad and Tobago, we representing the United States. Our kinship and zest for life made us instant friends. That trust took us on a two week road trip together through the vast Brazilian landscape , the eight of us crossed the rural states of Goias, Parana, São Paulo, finding ourselves frolicking in Rio’s Carnival , returning exhausted in hot pursuit to our abodes in Brasilia. Our car radios belted out Bob Marley’s ‘coming in from the cold’, as we ate Brazil’s finest roadside comida along the way. And how we danced through this trip and our diplomatic tour always finding a way to insert Soca music in the Brazilian clubs and parties.

Winston helped us celebrate Earle’s big birthday in Atlanta, and memorably shared our farewell to Earle’s mother in New York with such stunningly precise remarks.

We , Earle, Barbara, Philippa and Olivia will always appreciate his spark and the life and family he helped create, and the beauty of Hazel and Pamela. We will keep his dynamic persona close in our hearts, Toni and Kemba.

With so much love,

The Scarletts
