So far we know Arthur and his step-kids. His step-kids are really into dark and evil stuff and talk about them during the day before Christmas. Arthur has something he had in the past but we couldn't know what happened to his previous family. We also know his past when he was 23 years old and the dangerous fog. He foreshadowed the evil things that will happen during that time with his railway job. He now foreshadows the future of the darkness with his new step-kids. The techniques I saw were foreshadowing, repetition, simile, dark adjectives such as evil and the noun fog. The flashbacks also show his past and the darkness he experiences which might be why he is not going to be talking about horror stuff with his step-kids. He is also giving a lot of teasers and tension to rise which causes us to read through the book to know what exactly happened.

In the pages we read we were introduced to Arthurs step-family on Christmas Eve. His step-children were telling each other ghost stories and it was considered a tradition. Although, Arthur found this uncomfortable and tried to hide his emotions. Then his kids asks him to share a ghost story. This was the final straw and he lied about having no ghost stories, then he stormed out the house to calm himself down. Once he composes himself, he thinks of a way to free himself from the horrible memory that has been a burden to him. He then talks about this event that has changed him. It takes place when he was 23 years old when there was a horrible deadly fog. These events are probably foreshadowing the future events in this story.

This article is talking about dystopian stories, which are like visions of what authors thinks might happen if things take a bad path in our society. Some themes found in dystopian stories include government control, environmental ruins or technological control. It further expains the difference between utopian stories which imagine a place in its most perfect scenarios and dystopian stories which do the exact opposite. An example of a dystopian story can be “ The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, and an example of utopian stories would be “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. There are also books that can be can be recognized as both genres, like Jonathan Swift's “Gulliver's Travels” because it shares the general preoccupation with ideas of good and bad societies.

Q1 - A

Q2 - B

Q3 - D

The article talks about dystopian fiction, where the author amplifies societal issues into a horrific universe. This is the opposite of a utopia, which is a perfect society. The author compares a dystopia with a funhouse mirror, which amplifies flaws so that you notice them. After discussing the etymology of the word, thr author then states that hopes of a utopia were high in the post-industrial 20th century, but was never achieved despite several technological advances. The author then discusses the example of 1984 (by George Orwell), which showed the dangers of totalitarianism and industrialism, such as surveillance and little personal freedom. The author finishes by referencing dress code in The Handmaid’s Tale, and talks about how dystopian authors often reflect the fact stifling tiny choices like outfits or toothpaste can stifle wider situations such as family structure.

This tells a story of a world that has strived for absolute perfection and equality. In this universe, the government uses different methods to make everyone equal and strips them of their individuality. These methods include putting a device on George, who is described as having above average intelligence, and masks on ballerinas who are considered more beautiful than others.

The story follows the Bergeron family, made up of George, Hazel and Harrison. Harrison is in jail for attempting to overthrow the government and their methods. He escapes jail and crashes the dance party, which was interuppted by a news announcment describing him as atheletic and a genius. When we see him at the dance party, he is wearing devices and gear, such as huge headphones to prevent him from thinking too hard, similar to those George has, and huge glasses to make him half blind and give him intense headaches, among other gear. He rips them all apart in an act of government opposition and nominates himself as emperor. He then selects an empress and for a few minutes Harrison and his new empress (who's handicap and gear he's also ripped off) dance, which represents their freedom. The chief enforcer of the equality and lack of individuality law enters the dance recital and shots Harrison and the ballerina dead.

Q1.

This article talks about the genre of dystopian fiction, which shows a world where everything's messed up. The author talks about how dystopian fiction is like a funhouse mirror, as it shows the worst sides of someone and then makes them realise that they are flawed. Dystopian fiction shows us what could happen while we strive for perfection. Common themes of dystopian novels are surveillance (which is something we tend to worry about), misinformation, the dangers of genetic modification and lack of individuality. The text warns us not to strive too hard for "perfection" in our world as it may lead to a world similar to that shown in dystopian novels.

Harrison Bergeron is a dystopian story set in 2081 where everyone has to be equal in every way including natural things like strength, beauty or intelligence. The government equalizes people by applying rules like having a device that produces sounds that stop thinking too much, disabling people using handicaps and hiding extra pretty faces under hideous masks. A boy called Harrison - well known for his several attempts to vanquish the government and free everyone from all the unjustness - escapes jail, goes live one tv to challenge the government by taking off all devices used to equalize him and force another group of people to do the same. He doesn't succeed though as he is soon killed by the handicapper general, Diana Moon Glampers, as a warning to anyone who tries to challenge the government and disobeys law. This story is showing us the importance of individual uniqueness and how too much equality can sometimes be a bad thing.

B

B

D

A
