Poulis: Gender stereotypes is when someone takes both genders and says what they each should like, what their jobs or hobbies should be and how they should dress. In a gender stereotypical world it would be wrong for women to be in the office or at home rather than doing jobs like construction. This behaviour is natural as it comes from a thought which a group of people have taken which has made stereotypes for each gender.

The media over categorises social groups and changes our acceptance on stereotypes. Imagine defining someone over how they look and finding out they are the complete opposite. Stereotypes can stop you from getting to know others and because of other people's intuitions on someone, the world believes everyone who acts/looks like that is the same. Therefore, gender stereotypes are nutured thoughts because growing up with people who have different thoughts can also change ours as well.

Neelah. A gender stereotype are a matter of nature as you can tell your brain to not do something, your brain chooses to do what it does, so your brain will naturally think to make a stereotypical thought like seeing a women working in a job that men usually work in, in this situation your brain will automatically make a stereotype.

Stereotypes in our modern world have definitely been nurtured by many influences like social media and relatives. Social media in particular has almost god-like power over the people who indulge in it everyday. Therefore, they are able to feed in false generalizations of particular groups, and many individuals will believe in it. This chain reaction and authority not only social media but our own relatives and friends have over how we perceive people show that we have been nurtured and grown to create and believe generalizations are that completely nonsensical and hurtful to the victims of it. The world would be unrecognizable if the word 'stereotype' didn't exist.

The media can be prompting stereotypical behaviour unconsciously and when someone else sees the post they might copy the behaviour or take it in the wrong way/use it in the wrong way, this process unfortunately sustains stereotypes. Every country has their own perceptions and stereotypes, for example wealthier countries view “poor” as not having designer clothes or not having fancy gadgets but in less fortunate countries their definition of “poor” is homeless, no clothes and no food or access to a proper education.

Some of these reasons include, the media generally targeting many people, the media promoting people thinking in a certain way, the media influencing the way we see others. They also argue that these stereotypes can also be made due to lack of contact with a certain place of thing, leaving us with not alot of information. An example of how the media can promote stereotypes is for example “africa has no water, or no food, and is a really poor country”. This is just assumed, and our brains start building ideas of africa, that can be false and untrue.

Are stereotypes a matter of nature or nurture? Stereotypes is a matter of nurture for these reasons...When being around people who consciously or unconsciously use stereotypical behaviour in their daily life or on a day to day basis, you start to watch and observe their behaviour without realising, you could be listening to them or watching them and not realise until 5 minutes later. Another case that shows stereotypes is a matter of nurture is that when your family or someone that you look up to is being stereotypical your brain automatically thinks that is what you should be doing since you trust that person or see them as a leader/role model. Social media is also a big part of this as people such as influencers can give the wrong message and that is what produces and sustains stereotypes. Therefore stereotypes is indeed a matter of nurture.

Arion - Stereotypes are matter to be to nurtured from humans and has developed over the centuries because human has found more hate on yourself and comes to something small such as male advertising a gun to a women doing all the house work because they are “women” and it is way people think how people should be and this situation has gotten worse to advertisement where object such as nerf are being held by male or barbie girl which is being held by a girl, jobs were some jobs don’t allow women to do such as construction worker or jobs which won’t feel right for male such as bala dancer and even action movies ! such as James Bond, the main character is male actor because male is supposed to be “strong and independent ones “ so therefore it is shown that stereotypes are caused by humans because we have been following them for a century .

An example of associated networks would be as simple as a person walking down the street. Depending on this person’s gender, the clothes they wear, the way they walk and even what street they are walking on can activate your associative networks. E.g. You see a genderless person walking down Beverly Hills, wearing a McDonald’s uniform, a Gucci handbag and diamond earrings. Most would immediately think of a female teenager to post-teenager who has rich parents and works for minimum wages. However, this person could ultimately be poor and wearing things that were lost and never found or this individual may own several McDonalds’ stores and is wearing the uniform to support and engage his or her workers in wearing proper work uniform. Either way, all of our minds make some sort of assumption (whether noticed or not).

Associative networks are a normal stimulus response to the things around you. This happens when we put two and two together or link 2 things together such as a judge and a gravel. This is a certain type of organisation that your brain naturally does to accept information easier.

Where do gender stereotypes come from? Stereotypes are the generalisation and assumption of something or someone. However, why would there be generalisations if everyone is different? Are stereotypes a matter of nature or nurture? Stereotypes could not be part of our human nature as if a woman and a man were separated from society, they would not have any assumptions about the other gender. Therefore, stereotypes are nurtured behaviour.

I believe stereotypes are nurtured because if you had two babies stranded on an island will they know what stereotypes are I believe that they will not know what stereotypes are the media in the modern world is very stereotypical like boys have to be fit and girls have to clean the house and take care of the kids this shows that the media can be stereotypical this just shows how stereotypes are nurtured
