Adolf Hitler's First Written Statement on the “Jewish Question” - September 16th 1919

Hitler writes a letter addressed to a soldier named Adolf Gemlich. In the letter Hitler states that being Jewish is a race rather than a religious community and includes many antisemitic lies about Jewish people. This is one of the first times we see Hitlers plan to eliminate all Jews as he says that the ultimate goal should be the full removal of all Jews.

This is significant because that is the first time we see Hitler coming up with these ridiculous plans to remove all Jews from society. This should have been a warning sign for all people to take action; people could have been making efforts to help the people of Germany from surrounding countries.

Nazi Party members declared publicly their efforts to segregate Jews from society and to essentially work towards taking all of their rights. One part of the program stated that only someone of German blood could be considered a citizen, "therefore, no Jew can be a citizen".

This has significance because it shows how Jews were being segregated for many many years in Germany. We can see the rise and improvement of the Nazi party here, as they continue to make bigger plans to eliminate all Jews.

Hitler is not immediately given ultimate power but comes to be the president of Germany when Hindenburg dies. The Nazis and Hitler slowly turn Germany into a dictatorship, gaining power and fear from Germans and Jews.

This was a significant time in the Holocaust's history because without Hitler, Germany would not have become what it did. Hitler was the Nazi party leader and at this point in time we can see him slowly gaining power over Germany and turning the country into a ruin.

Just outside of the town Dachau, the very first concentration camp was established. The camp was initially created to persecute political opponents, any communists, social democrats and all other “outcasts” were placed in the camp to correct their beliefs. This is believed to be the only concentration camp to have been in operation during the entire Nazi period.

The establishment of the first concentration camp is a pivoting point for the Nazis and for the citizens of Germany. This is a little bit of insight into what Germany was soon to look like; I believe this to be significant because I think this is a time when people living in the surrounding area could have taken action to either stop the Nazis, or flee.

A law is issued about overcrowding in schools and universities which dramatically decreases the amount of Jews allowed in schools. Soon after Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany he started to drastically limit Jews rights in the country. No school could have over 5% of Jews, and often taught about love and obedience to Hitler.

This is a major point in history where we can very vividly see the German government discriminating against and limiting Jewish people. This is especially an important Law because it is limiting the amount of Jewish children allowed basic education. Hitler is not only targeting outcasts in the country but he targets the younger generation here.

The government of Germany bans Jehovah’s Witness organizations because they refuse to swear allegiance to the state; they refuse due their religious beliefs. After this point Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted by Nazis and military services. They were soon taken to concentration camps for refusal to comply, and many died in the camps.

This is a significant time at the start of the Holocaust because this is the start of differing groups of people in Germany. We can see a different group of people being persecuted and assimilated by the Nazis early on because of their beliefs and refusal into the military. This is a time of depression for that group and a chance for other groups of people to realize the direction the country is going in.

Revision of Paragraph 175 - June 28th 1935

Paragraph 175 was a German statue that criminalized the sexual relation of men, not women. However, it was revised and made significantly harsher towards gay men. This allowed any suspicious contact between two men, in physical or social form, that could be taken as sexual to be penalized and could lead to the death or beating of the men. The essential goal was to persecute any homosexual as soon as possible.

This was a shift in time because it showed how much more serious the Nazis were about persecuting anyone who didn't follow every single law. We can see how the Nazis were willing to take more severe measures to ensure that individuals were living up to the Nazis standards. The Nazis saw gay men as weak and unfit to be soldiers, therefore making them useless and subject to harassment, arrest, incarceration, etc.

The camp had electric barbed wire fencing, automatic machine guns and watchtowers; the SS typically shot and hung prisoners in the crematory and stables. The majority of the early prisoners consisted of political prisoners.

A big point in time happens here as Germany is quickly intensifying and adding persecution methods. This is where citizens could have taken action to flee as this is a point where the country elevates to Nazis taking drastic measures. We can see here Hitler has no tolerance for people of a different group and is assimilating everyone to be the same.

He stated that Germany was a threat to all of Europe, and said that the community should prepare to face Hitler. He advocated for mutual defense from European Nations in hopes of providing security against Germany and what was to come.

This is one of the first times someone that had a social and political standing and following was brave enough to speak on the severe and dire situation Germany was in. This should have been a massive turning point in history, as this marked the beginning of when other countries were seeing how truly dangerous Hitler had made Germany.

More laws were soon put into place defining racial terms and forbidding marriage between a Jew and a Non-Jew. These also vastly separated Jews from typical Hungary life and the economy.

This is a significant time in the beginning of the Holocaust because this is a time where not only Germany had been targeting Jews, but another country. The riot littered the streets with glass and ashes after destroying Jewish property as brutally as they could. In the days to come Germany would extend laws and decrees depriving Jews of their property and ability to live at all, intensifying the drive to persecute all Jews.

This is where it starts, where the violence and destruction of Jews becomes a reality.
