Whether they are watching television or flipping through a magazine, teens are bombarded with advertising everywhere they turn, and it's not without its consequences. Companies know teens are vulnerable and likely to be consuming media and, therefore, target young people with their advertising. While the effects of advertising can be detrimental to teenagers, it's possible to combat the negative impacts by being proactive about what your kids view and how they interact with it.

Tobacco and alcohol advertising is a particularly negative influence on teenagers, according to a 2006 issue of Pediatrics, and tobacco and alcohol companies tend to target young people who are susceptible to this advertising.

Food advertising is another example of how big business can hurt young people. Foods that are advertised to young people are predominantly unhealthy and addictive. Fast food companies tend to use advertising that will appeal to young people, including incorporating television, film and sports icons into their advertising. A 2013 study from the University of Michigan even found teens experienced higher brain activity during food-related commercials than those that did not involve food items.

José Carlos Saraiva Silva Figueiredo nº10

Tiago Barreiras Cruz nº17

Although it might sound old-fashioned, teenagers respond to images and allusions to families spending time together and enjoying being together. Thanks to the high divorce rates in the U.S., teens may respond to seeing some semblance of a well-functioning nuclear family in advertising.

Companies pay athletes and celebrities millions of dollars to endorse their products. Teenagers -- and people in general -- gravitate toward following style and other choices that celebrities make. Seeing a famous singer in an acne cream commercial draws more of a response from teens than seeing a non-famous person in the same commercial.

This technique makes the argument that you can only be cool if you have a specific product or use a specific service. A perfect example of these advertisements can be found in the "I'm a Mac" commercials, which personifies a Mac as a hip, laid-back young person, and a PC as a stodgy, uptight and uncool individual
José Carlos Saraiva Silva Figueiredo nº10

Tiago Barreiras Cruz nº17

Their brand preferences are still gelling, they have money to spend, and they exert a strong influence on their parents' spending (even on big-ticket items such as cars).

On the radio and television, morality is an important feature. In newspapers, magazines and on the internet, language is more formal.
To conquer the consumer, advertising text appeals to people's desire and fantasy. The language of advertising uses ambiguities, omits, exaggerates, plays, uses two-way metaphors and expressions. You can also conquer using musicality, rhythm and sound features, such as rhymes and assonances. The use of language resources is essential for advertising to achieve its goals. Advertising should amuse, motivate, seduce, make you dream, excite or enthuse.

The advertising speech, for being persuasive, has a great power over the public. Its application gives power to those who use it. Advertising plays an important role in our culture as it promotes the symbolic exchange of ideas, products and services.
There is self-regulation of advertising, which sets limits of action and can veer the placement of some ads. Advertising texts are responsible for the quality of the products and services being sold. That is why they can not resort to lying or dishonest arguments.
Advertising should also not use inappropriate language: vulgar or derogatory language, which includes language of a racist, discriminatory, sexual or obscene nature.
It is emphatic about the prohibition of misleading advertising.
