There seems to be a few students who never take their exam and then fail the course. I'm not sure what the solution is. Maybe we talk to the student two weeks prior to the end date regarding the exam tentative date. I'm not sure why they get to the end and then avoid the exam.

I don't have nearly as many of these as I used to, I think students are catching on and finishing classes on time, or at least to be able to apply for the extension. Most of the drops are students that never made it past 20% and are not working nearly enough or communicating.

I think engaging them right at the start is key. The enrollment meetings with coaches has helped and I know we have talked about how to get more engagement with teachers. I think this is huge, because sometimes students will give up or become disengaged just because of one hard assignment or project, at least from my experience. If I can catch them early in the class they are more prone to ask for help again when they need it and not be stuck.

If a students last day for the class is today that means the final exam is "due" today but then they get 5 extra days to take it. and I almost wonder if there is way to maybe put the final exam before the end of course survey to allow more time in the class and for students who actually see they have 2 days to take the final THEN complete the end of class survey to see if they would get it done in that time frame, if this doesn't make sense I can explain it in person/video call lol

So when I have my orientation and i hear they were unsuccessful in other schools because they had a hard time showing up on time or wanting it for themselves, I already know it will be even that much harder for them to be online and working asynchronously with us.

However, I think by including more opportunities for connections with their teachers and other students can help through teacher check ins. I also think our brainstorming of different course structures could help students in ensuring they finish their courses in time, and changing our extension policy.

So many of our students (and parents) do not read the policy and handbook when enrolling and they miss out on a lot of information that could help them be successful. Even in our orientation meetings I find that they still struggle with meeting expectations and policies. If there is a way we can incorporate this into a class and possibly even include some fun things too (through ECAP) we can get them more motivated to do their school and feel the most prepared!

I know many of us coaches always highly encourage our students and parents meet with us, but I wonder if we can make it a policy that the student and their guardian must meet with us maybe once or twice a year to go over the grad plan and current pacing. I know many of us coaches already struggle with fitting in our orientation meetings for every new student and adding this would definitely take up more time so we would have to take this into consideration, but it is something that I wish we could require since many of the parents are so detached from their kids schooling and often times blame us for their kid being behind--despite the many communications we provide about their current progress/attendance/summary plans.

In some cases, yes students who do not meet attendance do not complete classes. In other cases we have to consider those students who procrastinate and finish everything last minute (still finish the courses) and students who only do the bare minimum day's work which does not take them 5 hours per day/25 hours per week. It's tricky to get students to work ahead in classes which is one reason why we increase certain students to 3 course schedules.
