I'm not sure what the solution is. Maybe we talk to the student two weeks prior to the end date regarding the exam tentative date. They ghost us during that time frame. But once I add a new class they start working again. Their overall course grade doesn't reflect their performance on the final exam. So when I have my orientation and i hear they were unsuccessful in other schools because they had a hard time showing up on time or wanting it for themselves, I already know it will be even that much harder for them to be online and working asynchronously with us. 

However, I think by including more opportunities for connections with their teachers and other students can help through teacher check ins. In other cases we have to consider those students who procrastinate and finish everything last minute (still finish the courses) and students who only do the bare minimum day's work which does not take them 5 hours per day/25 hours per week.
